American serama thread!

They might feel a bit lost in such a grand space, but I highly doubt they will fail to thrive. I agree about them tolerating confinement well. I always make sure my caged birds can still scratch and dust bath. They are all very content, however, I would love to be able to give them more space if I had the room. Heating such a large coop may prove challenging..I forgot to look to see where you are. Serama do feel the cold more than others. Most of all, put them where you can enjoy them and keep them safe!

I use fairly small cages for most of my birds but I let them out to play about an hour before dark about 5 days a week.
They love it and they all go back in their cages or beg to get picked up when dusk arrives.

Here's my set up for my banties. I have 1, 2, then 3 in the corresponding "townhouses". They spend most of their time in there, but I also have a small 4x8 run over the dirt that I let them take turns in. I know many people keep them in smaller pens, and the birds are fine. They do fine in my bigger pens too.

Edit: I don't get very cold, so the open-ness of my coops are fine for warm winter climates, but perhaps not as feasible in colder climates.

Those are awesome! I'm snagging this photo to show my husband. Maybe eventually I will have him remodel our downstairs with similar "townhouses". We get cold here so I could never do these outside but inside....

I used to live in Rancho Bernardo and then Temecula...spent a lot of time in Escondido! I have to say now that I have chickens I do miss that weather.

My favorite poop page http://www.chat.allotment.org.uk/index.php?topic=17568.0

Hope that helps.

Good website, although not while I'm eating lunch.

I've got the little girl isolated. She has passed very normal poos and a couple of puddles poos. She's eating and drinking and resting, just like normal. I've cleaned everyone's cages, even though they are on wire, the cross sections which are reinforced with wood were a little dirty.

Now I have another issue...I guess it's just Monday for me in my Serama world. I now have a 4 week old roo who had taken to fighting every other roo in the pen. They are all the same hatch batch. Today marks 4 weeks old, hatched 4th of July. I've removed him since he is latching on to the other roo's combs and won't let go. He is now in a pen with 2 older pullets. They've actually picked on him a bit too. Should I expect to re-home this tyrant or should I expect this kind of behavior. This is our first batch of Serama roosters.

Thanks,
Tina

I had a roo like this. I thought that he pecked out another roos eye (turned out to be ok). I seperated him to another pen..he got beat up for a while..and then I put him back in his pen. I haven't had a problem since!

That's good to know. Maybe he will be able to return to the other pen once his "time out" is over. My DH said to cull him, but I'm going to give him a second chance. I've been shown lots of grace myself so I guess he deserves a second chance too.
