Jen bringing them back for you? I am so jealous of all of you......
I think that is great..on both things. Get photos of babies for us.
These are just "hanging out in the cage" photos. They posed much better out on th etable, and few were pretty stressed out by the time I came around with the camera.
Chicklette 1,
Take lots of pictures and label them well when you save them. I haven't been all that good with every chick, that's just about too much for every chick but when you have one you like the looks of or think it's different or better than the others then do take pictures about every month or two. They run around and move constantly and when you're looking them over you may be like me and just oh and ah over them so I find that taking photo's gives me the chance to go over them more closely. Take them from different sides, front and back and as close and as clear a photo as you can. It's amazing what you'll notice then when you can look at them, compare to other chicks the same age, you see the faults and good points and it's silly but sometimes I don't even look at leg color when I'm playing with them then I look the photo over and think, wow, I didn't even notice that
I started out trying to take pics of every single chick....... that was crazy. Some obviously stand out whether for type, personality or color. Some are just cute and may develop into fine Serama's but you gotta draw a line somewhere. When I do pick one to "follow", I've been trying to start with down color, try to name them for ease of identification later and I try to remember to label the photo with the hatch date and parents if known, at least the rooster or roosters if there are more than one in a pen and I have some roosters that get along fine with other roosters when they're young. Brooster is already mating with 2 of my mature hens and one of them is laying so we'll see. I have the eggs marked. One hen is Prissy, my wheaten cocopop hen from Jerry and the other is Molly, a mottled hen from Cara that has a huge chest on her and has been a good layer in the past so she may be the one laying.
I know most breeders will keep everything till 6 months. I've been selling chicks that were old enough to sex that didn't really excite me. They may turn out SQ but I'm fine with that but I don't offer them as anything other than what they are, chicks. I did give a trio to a friends nephew for FFA but they were very young and all of them turned out to be cockerels so I told her to have him pick his favorite cockerel and I'll swap the cockerels for a couple of pullets the same age, I have 2 very nice black laced with mottling that will be great for him. I'm kind of excited to get to see how those cockerels are looking. They are 3 months old now and I haven't seen them since they were 3 or 4 weeks old.
RedroosterFarm,
I have several hens now with AWEsome chests that I've bought or trade for this year and both of my adult roosters have really god chests, good length of leg and good type but nothing perfect. I'll be culling to get more vertical wings and better, wider tails. Blu has an excellent tail, loads of feathers and a good spread. I have 3 or 4 very nice looking cockerels, no fancy colors but type is looking good and they're probably all going to be B's. One is right behind Brooster in age and he isn't showing as much chest yet but this kid has some leg on him and very upright. His legs are paler but I have some good hens to help with that. It's often just getting the right cross and then getting lucky that both parents give a chick what you were wanting out of them. I'll have some nice chested chicks to sell in the spring I think. Congrats on the ones hatching now! Make sure and post updates!
Kidcody,
Thank you! I hatched several this summer but he was a favorite. I have a couple of black pullets I've been really happy with too.
