American serama thread!

I'm going to jump in here about the use of FRONTLINE for lice/mites. Yes it works very very well, but I believe you need to get the FRONTLINE PLUS [the plus part is what kills the chewing lice]. Get the 23-44lb dog size and as Sun Valley Seramas said, load a syringe [no needle] and one drop per birdie. Works like a charm.

so does ivomec work the same as frontline? since that is what i normally do, bathe in adams flea shampoo and ivomec.... just wondering

I think this all depends in what regards we hold our own birdies. I found a vet in Pasadena that sees exotic pets [just think chickens are exotic pets

]. I have learned SO much in the 2 visits with her. I have a hen that had her eye pecked and it is not healing with "home" remedies so I had to make the choice; do I let her suffer till she either has to be put down or, by some miracle, she gets better? I chose the vet....she will be one expensive chicken, BUT she is my pet and I would do this for my pet. [The charge card company will just love me...hee hee]

i think i might tell the vet the same i would spend on an amazon parrot or purebred puppy.... hmmmm course the fact you even have a vet willing to look at a chicken- none here....

Key is now you want to keep them away for a laying mass off feeds that give them lots of protein to keep them from laying as long as you do that they will be fine . For small hen or pullet I dont give them any feed that carries alot of protein until their around 14 months ... that is what I learn from a few of my friends on the east coast try that and see if that will work for you on those small pullets...

Well I've switched to the Nutriblend green and gold 50/50, that several respectable folks recommend.... are you saying I should pull out the green 18% and just feed then gold 14%? or something entirely different? I been feeding all my upcoming generation a mix of green and gold Nutriblend since they were weaned off chick started in September, though I have noticed they like the gold better than the green.....

I'm getting plenty of eggs from my larger pullets that I've acquired, but none from my smaller ones that I hatched myself.

Are seramas a natural calm bird? I have an reeeeeaaaalllly calm hen. I am now starting to worry that something may be wrong with her, she is to well behaved!! She does have the sniffles, just in her nose. I gave her some tylan and a hug. She is just the sweetest thing, but she just doesnt move to much. I just got her on Friday and we were away for the weekend so I havent been able to watch her to much. I saw on here that a hen was suffering from a vitamin deff so I thought that maybe I should give her some baby vitamins.

Anything with less protein to keep the pullets or hen from laying but Gold Nutriblend is good .... Those are good feed you are keeping your birds on .... My feed store gets them in for 22 bucks a bag of 50 bls. Also sometime with those small hens you that to put the first egg or they break inside the bird and she will die from an infection . But after you put the first egg they should be ok and lay like normal just what I had happend with some of my small hens ... even Those hen with the short back cause there is no room in there for an egg to form right ...

"How much do you want to spend on a chicken?"

I have been asked this question....by a vet too...I looked her straight in the eye and said..."this is my pet and will treat it no different than one of my dogs or my cat...as long as I can afford it...I will do EVERYTHING I can do for this bird". She understood me perfectly.

Thanks Froggie.
I know it is her bed time. Her routine:
She flies up on the back of my office chair.
She then chirps really fast and loudly...litle short chirps. She starts rubbing her head in and around my hair and tries to tuck herself into my hair. This goes on for a few minutes. I know it time to put her in her pen when she starts to quiet down....I know then she has had her "bedtime story" and is ready for nite-nite.

frontline shouldnt be used every month NO.... people make that mistake.... do it once to all the birds and then as needed i do mine every 4 months reguardless of when they need it and i have NO bugs.... far as fertility goes i used to have a 0% hatch rate cara and chaili and several others can vouch for that.... i did some feed adjustment and learned from my mistakes and am now looking at about 80-90 even using frontline.... there is proof in the pudding as they say....LOL

ive done a ton of research and stuff on fertility cuz of my past problems and educated myself well.

also i swear by wheat germ super effective for reproductive organs with the folic acid and amino proteins.... plus the vit e it delivers is an added bonus

i have a friend who had a hen that never laid an egg the entire time since she got her back in march...today i was informed 2 chicks hatched this morning after a month of the wheat germ
