Oh my goodness, are we really that slow? Helloooooo? LOL

It's suddenly gotten cold, and I feel so guilty making my Seramas go outside for the day! But it's nicer than inside! But they're always huddled up by the patio door

I feel like my mother. When I was a kid, she was always trying to shoo us out of the house "Go outside and play!" LOL. It's a chilly 51 degrees right now, am I hurting them?

Hello just took a minute to jump online and see how everyone is doing. Been feeling guilty that I haven't been online but not up to it lately. My chicks are growing so fast and are so pretty. I was wondering if anyone has had a chick they raised indoors to mimic any sounds you make, sort of like a parrot does? I don't know which one is doing it but I began whistling at them when they were tiny babies as I snuggled them and one of them has began to make that high pitched whistle just like I always do for them. I sort of used it as a calming sort of clucking type whistle. I heard it the other day and sort of was perplexed. I used to mimic my parrotlet and even my canaries a few years ago and I guess I just thought it would soothe the chicks too. Anywho I hope everyone is doing well and staying warm. When is it ever gonna get warm?! I hate the cold and just let me hear your thoughts on the mimic abilities of chickens. Never had a chicken copy me like that.

That's so cute I think I heard one mimic me once as well, but I was doing a different sound that I have no idea how to spell out, LOL. So maybe they do? Nice to hear your chicks are doing well! I think they're so sweet, and really enjoy mine!

Turtle started trying to crow this morning. They will be 6 weeks on Monday. It's a pretty pathetic sound lol it kind of sounds like someone is attacking him and he's making this pathetic wheezing squeal LOL

It also snowed here in Tucson today! Not much, but it stuck!
Taco and Belle won't come out of their coop lol

If they are actually distressed, fluffy, huddled--let 'em back in or give them some shelter where they can get warmer. You don't want them to stress too badly with the difference between in and out, after all. Mine are kept outdoors, free-range style, and tolerated yesterday's unseemly hailstorm just fine, although they were quite happy to roost early.

LOLS nice to hear about american serama,but still,american serama has its originate location which is from Malaysia ...im from Malaysia and Serama chicken are sell at the price of 700 lowest 1200 highest,they are raise to for Tournament,the bigger their chest expand the higher the score,and their chicks are sold at 300 or 250...soo expensive,wish could get one with the normal chicks price..Seram in Malaysia has Grade to A,B,C etc...depend how big they expand their chest..

And the don't fly away or get eaten?
I would LOVE to free range once we move to a bigger place with some property - here there are too many stray dogs and the neighbors dog already got one of my roos who decided to explore their yard. I have been super afraid to let them out of their run outside because they are such good fliers. How do you keep yours in the yard?

LOL, I caught my NYD hatched boys making what I think are pre-crowing noises last night too

Nah, they're running around, so not too bad. They mostly like to hang out in the patio, I think they feel safest there. Unfortunately, that means they leave a ton of poop everywhere! LOL

That sounds expensive, but if you really wanted in fine breeding pair, I would guess it would cost you almost as much here. A lot of us don't have show quality birds, and I think that's why they don't cost as much

Actually, my Seramas are more camouflaged than my bigger birds in the yard, but yes, there is a big risk at my house of hawks and later in the evening, owls. But we have a big tree that covers the area I have them in, and they seem to like being loose, but I plan on making an enclosed run out there for them out of the old swing set. Kids have all out grown that thing, so it's time for a new use for it I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I've noticed my birds seldom fly higher than 3 feet, in fact, I've never seen them go over 3 feet?

I was wondering about this! I just got a shipment of eggs in and it made me think. Not turning wouldn't effect anything in the growth before the baby chicken is getting bigger and closer to the edges of the shell right?

Exactly. It is between days 5-7 that the veining really starts to take off.

Really? Belle my grown hen can fly over 6 ft up. She gets on top of the 6ft rabbit mansion all the time. I wonder if she is just a fluke? She's an incredible flyer. She is much better than Taco. She even flies with her diaper on.

I think I will have to try this!!! Maybe I'll even increase my hatch rate! Although my last hatch and ONLY hatch to not get totally bashed and destroyed in transit had 100% hatch rate, even though one of the babies died because Turtle pecked him down tot he skull =(
