American serama thread!

Hey guys! The eggs I got from Charliesweb1k's started hatching! Got one little blondie out! I got a problem though... I only have layer feed. Can I feed these newborn seramas layer feed? I can only go to the feed store on Sunday to get chick starter.

NO, do NOT feed chicks layer feed. There's so much calcium in it that it will ruin the chicks intestines and kill them. Is there any way you can go to the feed store today or tomorrow? They'll be dead by the time you go to the feed store on Sunday.

they don't need to eat the first three days, but what i would do is to grind up some dry dog or cat food in a blender for them, corn may clog their crop-

I'll second the yogurt, they love that, and the probiotics are really good for them. Eggs are exactly what they've been eating the last 3 weeks, so you can't get better than that. Do cook it though so that they don't get the idea of munching on the eggs they lay later in life ;)

Thanks guys! Will do! Last egg just hatched! 7 whiter ones and 1 black one! I'll get a better idea of what colors I got when they dry off! The first chick hatched 9 in the morning and has not even dried off a little! Now it's 5pm and I let some humidity out so they dry off!

Question on incubating temps, I thought 99.5 was the perfect temp for incubating eggs. I have seen others on this thread say they had perfect temps between 101 & 102, why higher than recommend? So far mine has had a low of 97.6 and high of 101. I don't want to up it because I am worried about it going to hot and cooking them. Am I doing it wrong for Seramas?

It all depends on the type of incubator you use. I incubate all my eggs at 99.5-100.0 using a Sportsman 1502. My hatchers are cooler bators that I made and I always lower the temp by half a degree when they go in there for the last 3 days. Everyone has different environments so not all of us will use the same method. Some of us dry incubate while others need to add water because the humidity where they live is too low. Through trial and error we all have learned what works and doesn't work for us.

Well the new Serama boys have been in with the "baby" birds for nearly a week now. The babies are all full size chickens except for a silkie and they range in age from 6-11 weeks I think. The youngest is just barely smaller than the smallest Serama boy.
I was wondering, do any of you have experience with multiple boys in a flock? I'm not sure these guys are totally mature yet but they al get along with each other so far. I put them up for sale just because now I have as many boys as I do girls, but if they stay so sweet and get along with everyone I really would like to keep them! I want to move the older of the "Baby" birds in the big coop with the other big girls soon but don't know if Hermanos - my EE roo - would take kindly to the little men in his territory.

If the three boys get along now, do you think they would continue to get along with other serama if I added more to them when I move the big girls out?
