hey! i have a HEN THAT HAS PROBABLY LAID 8- 10 EGGS SINCE I GOT HER THREE SUNDAYS AGO (TODAY WILL BE SUNDAY # 3) . I ASSUMED SHE MATED ON THAT SUNDAY. WILL TODAYS EGG, AND NEXT FOUR BE FERTILE? SHES A BIGGER SERAMA AND WAS WITH A BIGGER SERAMA ROOSTER. SO I'M GUESSING SHE HAD A LOT OF SEED IN HER THE DAY I GOT HER. ANY INPUT HELPS! THANKS!

If they are fertile these would be the last ones that are. They say that a hen can keep the roo's sperm up to 3 weeks.

Acceptable colors are: yellow, swarthy [yellow w/ black] green, black. The Standard of Perfection [SOP at a show and with breeders] is still open to any color but the SQ breeders are trying to breed out the green or solid black legs.
Also ear lobe color should be red with not white or pearl color at all for SOP.
This is why pet quality birds will have such a variety of leg colors, they are "culls" from breeding programs OR just someone that is breeding and selling pet quality seramas.
In the future of seramas the SOP will be tightening up so that only yellow or swarthy legs will be acceptable for show...hope that helps kukupecpec.....

Very cool! Thanks for the info froggie! I hope those of us that hatch and breed from our own group are not frowned upon for perpetuating non SQ birds. I love my little guys. I know they are nowhere near SQ, but they are adorable and I love being able to spread them to others who like them.

I know for standard shows, there have to be rules for judging, however I'm hoping, and I understand, that there will always be table top shows where color is never going to be a factor, and the birds will be judged entirely on type. I hope this is true, because limiting these wonderful birds to a handful of colors would be such a shame! A world where both can be accommodated is a happy world

HI, I am with you. .I just fall in love with these little guys.
I have a Roo about 6 months right now.............he is large for Serama.maybe I will weigh him this afternoon.
This guy is a lover .I open his cage and he walks right over to me...I pick him up and carry him around while I
feed the others and he chatters to me the whole time. He actually has nice type, just big. When he hears a hen, he pushes his chest out like...." here I am"..just to sweet. Cannot imagine life without a Serama....................or2.........or 20................

Do you use heat at all with yours? Just curious, since I live in Missouri and have similar weather. I got my first serama in oct and kept them inside all winter thinking it would be too cold. By February I couldn't take the obnoxious roos anymore, and booted them out, lol. It's gotten to 20 or so at night quite a bit since, and they've done well but I'm trying to plan for this winter. My adults are all B's, and 1 A (and a d but he will be leaving shortly). I was planning on moving my frizzle either inside or to a heated brooder in winter, but do you think the rest would be ok? That would be soo much easier if the funky feathered guys were the only one's I had to really worry about.

yes I did on the extremely cold days and most nights. I only had it at about 40 degrees because I didn't want to have it 60 degrees and then lose power and have them all go into shock.

also never thought of leg color. Kuku I will be interested in what you find with your birds leg colors.

I got one of these Farm Innovators Thermo Cubes last year and really enjoyed it for the winter. I got the one that turns the outlet on when it gets 35 degrees, then the light goes on and heats things up until it reaches 45 degrees and then it turns off again. I had a frizzle serama, otherwise I probably would have gone with the on at 20 degrees off at 30 degrees model, so it would only turn the heat lamp on for especially cold days. Keep in mind that wherever the thermocube is plugged in, that is the spot that registers the temp.

that's really cool! I have got to keep that in mind if I ever put my seramas outside again! My LF can take our cold easily. It only goes down to 28 degrees very very rarely
