American serama thread!

Okay... I think I might need to get some of these little guys... But I have a few questions...

Can they be sexed as chicks?
Will they be okay in a flock with silkies?
Are silkied seramas a silkie and serama cross?
Do they do okay in winter in a mixed flock?
Do they require any special care?
Are the roosters loud?
What could I expect to pay for a pretty girl to show?
I read somewhere that micros have a very short lifespan, is this accurate?

Thanks guys. :D

Chicks can be sexed at a certain age
silkies are one of the most docile and sweet birds they will probably be just fine
i cant help on the silkie serama but that is most likely what happened
probably but they cant stand degrees under 40
no they are like any other chickens just a little weak to the cold
the roosters are one third as loud of a normal rooster sometimes even quieter
i know chickens that go up to 100-200
not likely they can live a long life if taken cared of properly and kept safe from danger they are easy targets for predetors id recomend a coop attached to a run for maximum security

I can only answer the ones I've found out personally so far. We have only had ours since July or Aug. I know ours get along wonderfully with our silkie cross, she prefers them over the LF flock ever since her hatch mate was killed by a dog.
Sexing: I am new to chicks so I can only guess by the combs and attitudes, but it appears we have 2 cockerels and 3 pullets in our chicks. Only time will tell for sure.
Noize: I love the sound of roosters, their crow is so cute and not nearly as loud as our LF boys.
Special care: I have read several places that as chicks they need a finer crumble than LF chicks. The feed I bought for the most recent additions (5 chicks and a hen) is already a finer crumble than the feed for my LF flock and the older Seramas. If you want everyone to eat the same, say some Serama and LF chicks, you can always crush the normal starter crumble to make it finer.
Price: I have seen high quality show birds going for well over $100.

Good morning everyone.

Candled last night...day 15............for sure my little roo is doing his job.
Now I am getting excited.. lock down Monday....Have not hatched Seramas for a year or so.
They are so much easier to deal with during winter than LF.
I have them in the basement.
I'll try to get updated pics of parents later today.
I have a tiny (need to weigh him) solid red frizzle I am putting him with a white
straight feathered this week end.............
It is such fun to see what color combinations appear in the chicks...........
Also have a straight feathered red with a white black tailed hen.......
Will set from both of these combinations in a few weeks.

Aww poor little guy! My little roo Toy chases EVERYone around, he is absolutely king of the coop. He even pecks at (and occasionally tries to mount when he catches her off guard) my Toulouse Goose!! LOL

My Bhep eggs are hatching!!! YIPPEE!!!

First baby!

This morning

And three more to go!
There was one that pipped last night and this morning he was dead in his shell! I've never had that happen before! I'm so sad! Poor little guy =(

And here are my three EE chicks that my husband is sure were watching the new comers hatch (the one on the left is a week older than the other two)

Love the colors! Can't wait to see what I get from her. I have several that are viable. Go into lock down on the 21st.

Here are some of my breeders that i have raised.

A big Texas guy and his little birds..love it! I love your roosters, and that next to last pullet..she's beautiful! Have to ask, do you think these roosters that you have pictured here have a loud, screechy crow..or are they not so loud? I have one that is about the same size as your boys here. May be a tad smaller. Hoping his crow doesn't get any louder, he has been crowing for a month now, you would think/hope..at least me, that it won't get any more loud. I'm in a neighborhood..so far so good. The neighbors can't hear him when in their homes. I want to breed these so bad. If the rooster is too loud, I won't be able to keep him. Hoping for one more roo and a couple of pullets to get this breeding going. Have some nice heritage eggs in my bator to start working with.
The type on your first and second pullet you show here is very nice. That's how I would like mine to be. I want my roosters to have a bit of a closer type than my boy does now, but I don't want the real tight neck and tail type. Not for me. :)
