the only symptom she noticed was gasping. the last time she had a bird like that it was aspergiliosis (i think thts how its spelled?)

do your birds a favor and don't bring in any birds that are or have recently been ill.all it takes is one bug to wipe out an entire flock

thats the reason her and i are waiting a week then seeing how they are. if they still look bad/are infested im not getting them

not being mean,just poultry don't take kindly to sickness especially in winter months

Hi Everyone! I could use some advice.

I'm finally getting a Serama this week from a friend who needs to rehome her - she's beating up on her roo! Other than that, she's very sweet, likes to cuddle and I believe, just recently became an "inside chicken."

I don't know if keeping her in the house is really practical for me. I have a large chicken coop outside which is split into two sides, and a massive chicken run. Right now I have a flock of 5 big layers and five Silkies who haven't begun to lay yet. They all get along (after I kept them separated but visible for weeks) and they all roost together. The big girls pick on them a bit during the day but the little girls have plenty of bush cover and are no worse for wear. They can get into the side coop to eat, drink or hangout but I don't think they bother anymore. The big girls can't get into the side coop.

On one hand, I would like to put the Serama on the side coop (4x8 ft) like I did with the silkies so they can all get to know each other over the next few weeks. She would be totally protected but visible. I imagine the silkies would make friends with her as they will all be of similar size but I'm not sure. If I just treat her like a new chicken and let her integrate with the others, will she still remain friendly toward me? None of mine are cuddly but they will all eat treats out of my hand.

Alternatively, I could keep her in a big parrot cage inside the house but we leave on weekends a lot. I have a house sitter feed and water them but will she die of boredom in a cage all day while we're gone? If we go the inside route, I plan to order diapers and let her walk around the house for a few hours every day when I'm home but what about when I'm gone?

The parrot cage is 2.5 l x 2 ft w and almost 3 ft high. There are perches inside and on top. I should mention that I'm in Arizona and the cold is not much of a factor where we are.

well, i keep mine inside, some are in dog playpens, so they have alot of room, i do have some single birds in guinea pig cages, i have a hen that just will not accept another roo after loosing hers, so she has her own cage- seems content

i want opinions on these birds (these will be the ones im getting once they are clean of disease and lice)

this is the hen im getting (brown one) she has a long back does that mean shes not full bred or just bad stock?

off white pullet she has flecks of brown in her

white,brown and black would he be counted as mottled or pied or what? either way hes gorgeous hes missing part of his comb due to frost bite

Not sure about show rules but the roo with the frostbite can be a breeder if he meets standards I would guess the comb would be point reducing. The little white cockeral looks good might need some training to strut and lift his tail though. Don't know about the pullet with the long back.
