American serama thread!

I've been hanging out in some Serama Facebook groups that have a lot of members who show Seramas, and periodically they offer eggs, chicks, started or adult birds, but the prices are so high! But I figured if I keep an eye out, sooner or later I would have a chance to get some eggs from exhibition stock that are affordable.

So my chance came... I think. A lady posted gorgeous pictures of her Seramas, and said she had too many eggs, so she would sell some for $30/doz shipped. She said they would be "A's" and small "B's"

So I paid her for a dozen, which I received yesterday. She did a careful packing job, so that's a good sign, though one egg was broken. The remaining eggs looked bigger than they should be for A's and small B's. But I put them in a carton, and this evening, when I went to put them in the incubator that has my Serama eggs in it, the size difference became very obvious. These eggs are HUGE compared to my own Serama eggs. They're almost as big as Sebright eggs.

I'm a bit concerned about what's going to hatch out of those eggs.

That's interesting. I'm not sure how much it varies from one serama to the next but I did see that the egg the breeder picked up from one of his while I was there was way bigger than what mine lay. He hatches great chicks from those eggs and has beautiful stock. My C pullet usually lay 24-28g egg and My B hen lays 19-22g. I tought the C pullet would be better for breeding because she is on the large side and she is the one not fertile yet. Go figure.lol

I second what nikki asked AND the size of the eggs have NO BEARING on how big the bird turns out to be. You need to be much more concerned with the heritage of the mama&papa and PRAY that the eggs that do hatch turn into pullets that lay eggs and roos that shoot bullets.
In the show world there is NO CONCERN for size UNLESS they are over the limit and the nthat doesn't even come into play till after you have won a class. Want MORE info on showing Seramas go to SCNA http://www.scnaonline.org/ for more info on showing.
ALSO, you get what you pay for. There is a reason why those eggs/birds are more exspenve...
Did U get youe eggs from a reputable breeder? There are alot of wanna-bes out there that are selling either OEGBs or crosses and calling them seramas.

Quick question, just had a chick hatch without a toenail on it's middle toe, will it grow eventually? Or just a birth defect and will never regrow it? Its brother and sisters who have just hatched all have all their toenails

He should adapt fine, have had silkies do that

I can't show, I'm disabled with no transportation.
I also have a very small fixed income, that's why I'm having a rough time getting eggs from exhibition breeders. I can't pay $200-$300 for a dozen eggs.

WOW !! never expected them to run that high ladycat. guess i wont either. good thing i love them for what they are hu ? I have imperfections and so do they. no skin off my back. lol they are tiny, sweet , shaped the way they are supposed to be and that suits me. I wont ever get into showing them i am sure. just my eye candy.

Yes, they run that high, when the breeders will sell them at all. Many of the people who show them won't sell eggs at any price, and those who do, will only let very limited numbers go.

I have a mean Serama rooster. He is going out of his way to flog me whenever I let them out to free range. I only have two Seramas but we think the hen will be better off without him since he is so dominant. And his attention is always on her since we only have two. I think I am going to give him back to the person I got him from. She has big roosters and hens. But she has his other brother and sister and they just hatched out two babies. They are probably a month old or so now. What do you guys think? I am not trying to be mean. She will make sure that he doesn't get hurt though.

ETA: We have been keeping him and his hen apart for a little while. They have different days to go outside. She is so much more social! I think he had sorta been trying to keep her from coming up to us.

what i do with a little roo like that is keep him in a cage in the livingroom so he gets lots of hand on attention, socialized- usually it is young roos, and it sometimes take a bit, they are without a hen during socializing- separate cages. When you say free range are these not inside?
