American serama thread!

That hen was playing me.
She was off the eggs when I went back out there
and she went back on when I cooed at her 3 times now.
My birds are usually on & off their eggs for the first 2 days,
then they lock on, except for 1 short exit per day.

I was gonna bring her in at night until the nights warm up anyway,
so I brought her and the nest box in and put it in the brooder.
As it got dark Clodagh got in with the eggs.
I hope I'm not screwing with nature too much.

Hi guys! I've been looking at this thread and I have to say all the birds I see are beautiful!
Now to my birds. My crazy birds. I hope someone can give me advice.
First ofall, I have 1 roo and 4 hens, aged 7 months. They all live in this condo thingy I built for them

Then the last one took up residence in the breezeway. ..again sitting on nothing

I've been trying to let nature take its course...but it seems my chickens is sho gone crazy!
What's happening?!

It is not unusual for hens to set on nothing when they have gone broody; the same for two hens sharing a nest. My serama eggs hatch in 19 days. 22 days? Are they brooding eggs?

Yes...4 days ago when I opened the side of the house, one hen kicked an egg out onto the floor. (The two are sitting on about 7 eggs)
It busted and there was a fetus. I was raging mad but what can I do?
All the eggs should be fertile, as my roo is very randy...he mounts them constantly ( before they went broody of course)
The two actually sitting g on eggs won't let anybody near them. I feed and water them upstairs.
The one in the breezeway is laying an egg a day but not where she sits! She goes upstairs to the patio to lay.
The one in the actual room I built for broody hens isn't laying...just sitting.
I think she was the one that laid the tiny egg

Serama eggs hatch 19-21 days. Hopefully yours will hatch soon.

It is possible that the fetus had died, I have heard that the hen will sometimes get rid of Dead eggs

Something happened with my new chicks that may help someone else. When the chicks were three days old I noticed one staying off to the side, eyes partially closed and not moving much. The other seven chicks were running around eating and drinking. I've seen this before. After dipping the sick chick's beak in water several times the chick started to drink on its own; for a long time-then eating a bit and returning to the water dish again and again. It wasn't long before I could not tell which chick had been ill. It pays to make sure that chicks have learned to drink. All eight chicks are doing well; mom and chicks are now back with the flock and off the dining room table.
