American serama thread!

I put a half a cucumber & some cabbage or spinach leaves in a food processor & mix it into their food.
They love picking out the juicy bits.
Then, at the end of the day, I collect all the leftover food ( about 2 cups full )
I add water to make a mash and give some to everyone.
They eat it all.

It's funny, if any rain should get on their food during the day, they avoid the food dish like it's poison
but when I add the water, all of a sudden they treat it like kids getting ice cream.

Mine are rather odd with food too. If I put certain foods in a dish or scatter it on the floor the item is ignored, but hold out my hand with the same thing they come running to eat.

I rather think they are spoiled-Can chickens be spoiled?

I gave in and candled eggs this morning. The "Trace" egg died. The other four are growing. The air cells are not normal, a bit worried about that, but-well we'll see. Equally disappointing is that two more of my Midget (avatar bird) eggs died. So far that is four out of ten that were DIS. Two eggs are supposed to hatch this weekend. I'm hoping. I shouldn't be surprised that the eggs are not making it to hatching. The rooster was only three months old when the eggs were laid. Maybe next time.

Dorothy - 3 months old
When my pullets reach 3 months they do not get much bigger, if at all. Dorothy is beautiful and so very small. Do you expect her to get any larger?

The size of Dorothy is my goal with my smooth feathered birds. If any of Midget's eggs hatch I'm hoping that some will be smaller than the mom. Midget and Teeny are both smaller than their parents. so maybe... I have a long way, though, to reach my goal. Having a goal makes for fun.

What does Dorothy weigh?

I haven't weighed her yet.
Tribbles weigh quite a bit more than normal Serama of the same size.

I expect her to get quite a bit larger.
My birds used to seem to top out at about 5 months old
but now they seem to continue to keep growing.

Tiny little Charley finally completed a successful mating last night on older Gracie.
His own mate & her Sisters continue to swat him down.

Worf is chasing everything in feathers around the yard non-stop when he is loose.
I've got his mate's eggs under 2 different broodies now & am hoping it results in more tiny roos like him & Charley.

His own mate & her Sisters continue to swat him down. In time that will change. It took Teeny awhile to overcome that. He's never going to win over the silkie hen. She is huge in comparison qnd meannnnnn.

Worf is chasing everything in feathers around the yard non-stop when he is loose. Different again. I've one rooster, Wart, who I have never seen mate, but when he was with the hens the eggs were fertile.
I've got his mate's eggs under 2 different broodies now & am hoping it results in more tiny roos like him & Charley. Good luck!!

I need to buy a pair of seramas or serama eggs to hatch for my grandson to show at our Wayne county Ohio fair this year. We are new to hatching and have 2 incubatore one Little Giant w/egg turner and one styro incubator that Drew made for his science project. Drew has cared for a flock of 40 chickens for 10 months and had done 90% of all feeding and cleaning. I own 5 sultuns and 11 silkis. Drew has mostly brown egg layers and 3 cochin roosters. Drew sells the eggs from home and in the summer he takes them to town at the farm market. The egg sales have paid for not only the feed but also the fencing, netting feeding dishes and the incubators. Oh, and school lunches! Drew is dedicated to the chickens and as a grandma (and chicken advisor to his 4-H club) I am trying to do what I can to find some seramas. We could buy what ever is necessary or available. Please PM me if you can help or know where I could get some seramas
