When it rains it pours, I'm not catching any breaks!

One of my tribble eggs exploded in my brinsea mini advance.. which wouldn't have been a problem if I'd caught it right away, but I didn't check on it for two days. I was bed bound with sickness. A fruit fly must have gotten in there, because it was MAGGOT FILLED by the time I got to it. I dumped the eggs and in my scramble to clean it all out (worst thing I've ever cleaned, and I've cleaned some horrible things) the fan disconnected, fell in to the sink, and got wet. Now it isn't functioning! I might be able to fix it somehow but I don't have high hopes. Accident karma, perhaps, because I'm totally full of it turns out - those chicks are silkied after all, I just couldn't tell. Their flight feathers are deceptively hard! I feel like a chump, and now I don't have an incubator to boot. Going to replace it with one of those new IncuViews when I can, but it isn't a cheap buy, looks like I'll have a lull in hatching my own eggs for a bit.

On that note, Ra_ since you sent me eggs for baaasically no reason other than me being stupid, I'd be happy to pay for them + shipping. I wasn't trying to be sly or misleading and am very sorry to have taken advantage of generosity.

The first serama hen I ever hatched, one of my favorite birds in the world, passed away suddenly last night. Her comb and waddles were jet black instead of pale which leads me to suspect heart failure. There was absolutely no warning. RIP Ping.. I don't know what I'm going to do without her.. not only was she a great pet, she was my only midnight blue, an amazing broody, my smartest chicken, and she always "helped" with all the chores. Kids + Parents from around here come to visit and Ping was always a favorite, I don't look forward to telling them the news..

Sorry that this happened to you. Loosing the tribbles, hen, and incubator-the pits. Consider a broody hen or two. I've a large silkie that hatched my first serama. I found it rather incredible that this large hen could brood and raise chicks half the size of her own and not break an egg doing so.

Oh no!! She was beautiful, I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you have plenty of memories of good times together, and that her babies are ok.

Ouch. I had a generation that was 8 for 8 earlier this year.

To anyone who has tried to hatch Tribbles,
get a broody and I'll send you some eggs.

I'm wondering if Tribbles require less humidity?
Deanna & Gracie began sitting on January 1st & 2nd.
I brought them indoors in a room with a small space heater. The heater baked the air.
I hung a thick wet towel in the room that became bone dry every 12 hours.
I thought the moisture must be getting sucked out of the eggs too.
I figured chances were slim they would hatc & in desperation I sprayed the eggs with a water bottle a few times.
The 2 hens hatched 9 chicks between them and they are the amazing Dorothy generation.
There was NO humidity in that room.

I'm wondering if Tribbles require less humidity? You started with Tribbles in 2010-yes?? And Florida is not dry. Usually life adapts for its surroundings. But then, who knows, you may be correct as tribbles are not the usual.

I have a silkie that is brooding now. She is large for a silkie, but has hatched the smaller serama eggs without breakage in the past. She hatched my original serama. The only problem, if you want to call it that, is her nest is off-limits to any kind of intrusion. She's the nastiest, meanest crapper I've ever had. She's attacked me more than once for getting to close; especially when she has chicks. How many?? I leave that to you. Her eggs are close to twice the size of Tribbles.

And I thank you. Mums the word to my wife though. When she gets drift of this she'll have a field day teasing me about "wanting more".

I hope to be able to repay the kindness given some day.

I have 5 broodies but they are all already setting on scaleless project eggs. I'm in desperate need of full size hens so I'm hatching as much as I can fit under them. I will have to let you know if I have a serama ho broody, my big girls are all employed elsewhere! They all just hatched some babies recently so I'm hopeful they give themselves a break.

Also re: lower humidity, I always start dry and weigh my eggs and the tribbles needed hardly any water added at all in spring weather. I would have had a good hatch if it wasn't for what happened to the incubator that one time (the error messages turned out to be high heat alarm and power loss alarm)
