American serama thread!

I started using a ceramic reptile bulb this year and I really like it. Heat but not light. Still gives them "night time" like the brooder plates, but I like being able to see them. I give them an old stuffed sock, tie a knot on the open end (who doesn't have singles after the dryer eats one? lol) I also took a piece of cotton quilt batting, pinned a string to the center, and cut the outer edges up toward the center in thin strips (kinda like a dust mop?) I hang it over the brooder for a few days for really small ones to snuggle in.

Hey all, this topic has prolly been done to death but do you guys in the northern climes use supplemental heat in the coop or not? This is my first winter with Seramas and I don't want to lose any of them. I'm in NJ.

This is my little silkied Serama cockerel, Grumpy, from my @WVduckchick hatch. I love him to death!!

Here is an older picture (May) of my babies...

From L to R: Grumpy's butt, Negan, Fergus, and Suzi. Suzi and Grumpy are the most tame, they fly up on my lap. I can't even express how much I love these tiny birds. There is just something about them. :love:love:love

He is such a doll! :love

I am guilty of bringing a few seramas inside when its been cold, but only when I felt they were too young (momma turned them loose at 4 weeks!) or if one doesn't seem to be feeling well. I had Peaches inside for most of last winter, kinda respiratory thing. Treated her but didn't have the heart to toss her back out when she was used to the warmth. I actually liked having her inside.

We get cold, multiple snow storms, sub-zero, freezing... but never for long periods at a time without getting above 30°. Like we may get down to 20° overnight, but days get up in the 40's. Very seldom will it stay below freezing for more than a couple days at a time.

Thank you! (and a million thanks again for your wonderful, super-fertile eggs!)

So you don't put supplemental heat in their coop? NJ winters aren't brutal, but they do get into the teens occasionally. My hub was gonna rig some kind of small, non-flammable heat source for them.

I really dig their personalities. They seem much friendlier than regular chickens. I will always have them.

I need to post some better, more recent pics, but they are always moving!

My crazy birds won't even go inside their house at night. All my other breeds go in, but the seramas sleep outside, up on high perches. I have 8-10' high, open-air pens, with sleeping "boxes", with metal roofs. I put wind-breaks up in winter, but these crazies like to sleep outside. I'll lose a few comb points on roosters, but I let them do what makes them happy. Young ones will go inside at night sometimes.

This is the one that stayed inside last winter.

Here's some siblings having a little spat. They are 8wks old tomorrow. The spitzhauben looks very female. I've also been thinking the silkie-serma mix may also be female. What do you think?
The comb looks flat like a silkie pullet. The chick looks mostly silkie except for the serama wing position & maybe wattles instead of the beard & cheeks. The crest is also very small as a result of the mix.
