American serama thread!

I do, just be sure to get one of those reptile sand scoops from the pet store, it gets dirty REAL fast. The kitty litter scoops DON't work. It sux when they spill their water, its hard to get dry, but otherwise, I like it because its easier to clean up off the floor. Shavings can travel great distances.................

I lot of people in AZ use sand and love it. I think nurseshelly has it in her serama run. That say there is little dust and it is easy to clean. I think that some Cali people use sand in their brooders aswell.

I just tried to put some FBCM out in the grow out pen and went back to check and it had been pecked alot. back to the brooder it goes until I can convince my husband to build a divider in the grow out pen for newbies.

If and when mine hatch, I am going to put paper towel over sand for a while and then when things start getting messy, I will remove the paper. I have my 5 &6 month old Seramas on sand. I also put some shredded paper product in one end of the cage for bedding. It works out pretty well for cleaning but I only have 3 so it is easy. You could keep the sand shallow for the babies. If you are showing then I might mention that the wings will be in the sand. Mine have not been damaged by it but it could possibly abrade them.

I'd be interested to hear more about sand. I've heard mixed reviews. Some people think it isn't very healthy for their lungs (and ours)...others love it and swear by it. Since all my Seramas are inside, I'm constantly looking for easier and better bedding ideas. Right now I used wood pellets and I'm happy but it's difficult to clean. You can't really scoop it out, you have to remove all of it and start over, which also can get expensive. Anyone have health concerns for the chickens and/or people with using sand? And what type of sand?

I use sand in my Serama hutch. It works GREAT.

The run underneath has sand in it, and then the top part where they sleep has sand. I don't have to provide grit, it makes for an egg-cellent dust bath, and I hardly noticed the smell since I started using it.

This is GREAT news. I am planning to use sand in my new Serama aviary. Happy to hear it is so successful.

I haven't tryed it in my brooders or such yet. But I'm really pleased with how it turned out. My Seramas just LOVE it!

So I started running again and about 1/4 mile from my house a coyote ran aross the road in front of me, today. It was still light out. It turned and looked and keep running (more like trotting). I knew we had coyotes out here, but its really rural so I thought they were far away. I am definately keeping the seramas locked up now. CREEPY!

I had got a late start on feeding the chickens one morning and it was around 10:00 before I let out the chickens. Well, I had just let out the chickens and I hear one of my roosters raising a FIT behind the barn, so I climb the fence and low and behold what do I see??? Two, big, fat coyotes sitt'in right there staring at me!

I don't know what to do, so I start screaming at them etc...doesn't do a whole lot of good, so I run back to the house and come back with the gun, but by the time I got back they were sitting JUST out of range. *sigh* Lost over 30 chickens to them dang coyotes last summer, not to mention THIS summer.
