Chaili, let me know if you still need a white chick for Jessica, I have one but not really sure if its a male or female and how typie he/she going to be. He/she looks about the same color as what I gave Ray, all white with a few peppering feathers.

I've got a small paddock divided in half and I've planted grass and let it go wild in there. I'm going to fence off half of one side of it and then try to use fishing line to 'weave' a net over the top so the birds can play all day long. I've never seen any varmints get in there during the day, except for the many wild rabbits that live around here.

Don't you have hawks up there? I tried freeranging but it was like a hawk cafeteria. I now have to sit out with my birds for about 90 minutes every evening to keep them safe or they'd never get to frolic in the yard. I went inside to use the bathroom last week and came out to a pile of feathers.
I don't have the heart to shoot any birds. I used to volunteer at a wild bird rescue .
We do have tons of hawks, bald eagles ect. I have lost 1 serama to a hawk in 5 years, the key for me is to have lots of hiding spots for them to dive into. The crows around here chase the hawks off usually.
I would never shoot a hawk or an eagle or any other bird of prey but who's to say my pitch fork didn't fall out of my hand and bop em if the time comes

Hmmm. The grass is so overgrown in my paddock right now, the birds would easily be hidden. I think I'll give it a try this afternoon.
I've seen crows chasing a hawk here too but the crows get scared off a lot because I've got a neighbor who shoots anything that moves. He's not real close to my yard because I'm surrounded by vacant acre plots but it's still pretty loud when he goes on the warpath.
I've got plenty of hiding spots elsewhere on my acre, including my prizewinning 10 foot weeds but the birds prefer to stay in the open, when they have a choice, even though they just witnessed that hawk attack. They hid real well after the attack but only for the rest of that day.

Unfortunately some learn and some don't... After I lost my black serama hen to that hawk last year and the rest of them watched her being shredded and dragged the full length of the property They all learned to duck and cover quick. It was after that attack where I found her body there are 3 very large pine trees, after a few bad storms and having lost a few trees we placed the cut up trees in a pile between the 3 pines, kinda like a den, they can crawl in, perch on the branches under the brush but the hawk can't get in. We also have a truck topper out near the run for them to dive under, a deck off the back patio missing some lattice big enough for them to scurry under there but too small for hawks or dogs. My backyard looks like crap but hey the birds are safe
. AT any given moment tho it could happen again, I think of it as the price they pay for freedom. Now if I was breeding that would be a different story and they would be in breeding pens with limited access to the back yard via make shift portable enclosure. They don't protest much when they are locked in their run if we are out doing yardwork or going to be gone for long periods of time. I wish you the best of luck on finding a good way to let your birds range yet keep em safe at the same time, it can be a real challenge.
Here are some pics of the various hiding spots we have in the backyard.
The brush pile i mentioned, also the truck topper
The back patio/deck area, on the left is the deck and the garden in from where all the cosmos are is another favorite hiding spot, to the right is chicken jail. If someones been naughty they go there til they shape up, also used as another getaway when not housing the "bad guys" They dip into the flowers and behind the garden, thru the lattice and to safety under the deck, works great! The cedar tree is another favorite hideout. I trim under it to give them room to perch on branches Under the natural canopy of the tree.
