American serama thread!

Oh my gosh, they really are tiny when compared to the coffee mug in the background! Wow! They're also a beautiful pair!

SunValley, How do you put the aluminum ones on? They look like solid rings? And do the snap on ones stay snapped? One more question, how well would they fit other bantam birds? Ooooh, and final question, will the red or pink color cause other birds to peck?

Any animal, and any person, can be a carrier of a disease. The fact is that you are 100% more likely to catch something from another person than from your birds.

The reason a lot of people do not have their birds, in the main part of their house, is not from a disease but from dust. I currently have all my Serama and four of my Silkie's in my dinning room- while I change their housing around. There is dust everywhere!! I have damaged lungs (hospitalized with Beijing flu years ago) and I have a Pom with a lung issue. Both of us are feeling the dust.

There isn't a smell, as I keep the cages clean (even visitor's said that they can not smell the birds and only knew because they heard them).

The noise is pretty small and I don't even notice until one of the boys crow, and they are not loud-- I just smile, because I had forgotten that I had them in the house until that reminder :)

Lot's of people put them in their garage or in a spare bedroom where it is easier to control temps without having them in the main living area's.

Sheila :)
I'm not worried about getting sick from them myself, I worry about the chickens giving something to my parrot. I am way more worried about people germs than animal germs. It's funny, I'll spend all day at the barn, grooming horses, etc. and will eat something without washing my hands, but don't eat anything after I've been at the grocery store until I wash!

My hubby and I were just in New Orleans. He stepped in a nasty puddle in the French Quarter with flip flops on. When I commented on it, he said "what, I don't think there are any mules on this street." I said, "I'm not worried about the mule poop, I'd rather sick my bare foot and wiggle my toes around in a warm, steamy pile of mule poop, than what is probably in that puddle!"

I totally agree that it's better not to try to keep animals (or kids) in a sterile environment. There have been plenty of studies done that show that kids that grow up with animals are less likely to have allergies.

I lost a Sun Conure several years ago to something, the avain vet couldn't figure out (and she is supposed to be the best avian vet in the state). When I got a new bird, she suggested I be careful not to spread germs from my ducks to the parrots. I just don't want anyone to think there's no risk to exposing parrot species to poultry or waterfowl. They can transmit disease between the two.

As for the smell, I think different people have different tolerance levels. As soon as a chicken poops, I think it stinks. Even changing the cages every day, I think it stinks. Now, brooding ducklings in the house doesn't bother me and some people probably think they are smellier. They smell different.

So, my advice to anyone thinking of getting Seramas to keep in the house would be to spend some time around them and see if the smell and noise bothers you before you commit to it if you don't have the option of putting them outside.

One more question, how well would they fit other bantam birds?

OK serama world what do you think of the Samples, of the Leg bands we are getting for Wild West Serama Club for the 2013 year.   The aluminum ones will be 11mm wide and 6mm tall and the plastic will be 10.5 wide. They fit well on seramas and I am just waiting for a cost on the plastic ones, then the taking of orders will begin. Think hard of how many you think you will be needing for the 2013 Season ( do you have adults that need bands get the snap on ones as well to ID them) I am also just making sure the plastic also have the Year # and Ribbon Symbol, either way we will be placing an order for the plastic snap on Hope you enjoy what you see. All Profits from the sales of these bands are going to a Cancer Reserch Facility that Kelly Duyck has chosen.. Orders and instructions will be posted on the WWSC web page and facebook soon!!  Not a Member dont worry it is Free to join, we also have a facebook page and you can find us on the world wide web aswell.  Thanks for looking we are excited about these..

Wow thanks to all who are showing interest in these bands. It is appreciated..

Thanks All for the info. on Laura's eggs.. New stupid question: has anyone had them shipped cross country?

Grandma Bird: DH is currently building me a mini coop and run in the basement.I'll post pics when he's done. I have little choice because of the harsh winters here. We'll see, but I'm not expecting too much mess. They have the tidiest coop now, besides, I've had parrots. Parrots are messy!!!
I have never had any inside birds before, but just got my first serama pair. They are in the house and they are so quiet compared to mt friends parrots and caneries. I have three of mine in a dog crate for now, 2 ft by 3ft. But i am ordering a 30" by 36" by 54" high parrot cage for them. Looked around and found a good deal on it. I think . . . that is/.....I think its big enough

Getting ready for the holidays at OC Seramas!!
