American serama thread!

In the past 2 weeks I have hatched out serama eggs from 3 different people all have pipped on day 20 and hatched on day 21. I have locked down all 3 sets on the end of day 18 beginning of 19.

You folks have some really awesome birds. I will be following this thread for sure. Any East TN breeders on here? I haven't had a chance to look it up on the other threads.

I bought a trio of Seramas the other day from a very nice lady. She had to get rid of the roo, because of neighbor complaints, so let me have the pullets too as they are pretty attached. The smallest, I think is a micro. She just doesn't thrive, shivers, always fluffed up like she can't hold body heat. She eats, and drinks, but this gal is light as a feather. Does not hold her tail up ever. Her facial skin is ivory, and her beak is too (I would post a pic but  I need a card reader for the new computer) . She is soo.. pale.  She seems happy, just not healthy.I really don't believe this is illness or parasitic. The farm she came from was  beautiful, immaculate, and all of her animals were the picture of health. She told me this pullet had always been like this, and so she catered to her. Do any of you have experience with micros? I know they can die early, but I would appreciate any advice.

 

I haven't been posting for awhile but since this question wasn't answered I will throw in my 2cents.
MICO seramas generally speaking have shorter life spans, are usually infertle and some hens do not lay eggs. They need special care from the cold- [50-60degrees in a basement is too cold and damp for them] Try giving save-a-chick or something similiar, lots of fresh fruits/veggies/alittle hardboiled egg etc..... and lots of TLC. Maybe try separating her at feeding time to make sure she really is eating and keep her warm and see if that helps. I will look for an update........

Hi miss heny. to BYC American Serama thread! Your birdies are SO CUTE but they are NOT show quality seramas.. I hope you do not take offense at my bluntness I am not trying to be mean at all. Love your new birds for what they are>>sweet and huggable darlings! and research the serama breed to find out for yourself what physical traits make-up the Serama. We all love chick pics here, right? These two hatched this weekend for me. The one on the left is from purchased birds, and I'm curious to see what color he ends up. He's white with a wide black stripe down his back. The right chick is from one of my wheaten pens, and is 1/3 the size of the other. He hated being out of the pen for the photo (too cold), so I'm questioning the wisdom of hatching so late in the year.

I just had to tell someone my terrible story, so here goes. In February I bought a trio of Serama chicks. Turned out to be 2 roo's and 1 pullet (Fred, Barney & Betty). They live in a very nice coop with an approx. 10x12 covered run, jungle gym, and 3 d'uccle hens so poor Betty doesn't get "it" too bad. All has been fine until today, happy family. I saw a commotion going on in the pen, and ran out to see what was going on. Both of my Roo's were next to dead, and had absolutely shredded eachothers faces. I have never seen anything like it in person and can't even properly describe it. If that is what bantams can do, I don't even want to know what full grown Rooster's are capable of. At the time I thought they would both die, but they seem to have recovered except for how awful they look. I separated them of course, but I'm just really heart sick over it. I guess I should have known better, but they just all got along really well together. Lesson learned, but definitely the hard way.

some roos are okay with each other, but some, sadly are not

i know that most seramas are k with roos of there own, i dunno about the more agro roos. sorry for your lost

That's good for me to hear, gardeningmama. I would have done the same thing, but because of your story, I will separate any roos I might have (still tiny chicks). Thanks for sharing that story!

Mine usually start to have minor fights starting around 4-5 months of age. First sign of any issue, I separate them.
