American serama thread!

Here's how you keep your birds warm, folks!  Cannonball and his wives enjoy their bun warmer; it's a Christmas cookie tin with a low watt spiral bulb installed inside.  Just make sure that the bulb doesn't touch the metal, and wire it safely.  In the past, I made them a light inside a cardboard box (to keep the heat in), but nobody used it.  With the cookie tins, the birds stay comfey all winter.  Just make sure you have enough surface area for everyone to climb aboard!

What a great idea! Do you just set the bulb on the floor and set the tin over it? Is it low enough watt that fire isn't a problem even with all that straw and whatnot so close and against the cookie tin?

There is no color standard for millie fleur at this time. As the Serama is still considered a new breed, we are working on each of the OE colors one at a time. Currently, there are colors descriptions for wheaton, exchequer, mottled, black, white and those are the colors that are being worked on for ABA/APA acceptance. I believe there are a few other descriptions that are drafted but not sure they are posted. Refer to the OE colors for descriptions. As Table Top showing is color blind, there is really no rush for color descriptions. Through the end of the year, Serama are show as AOV for in cage. Beginning in January, we need to label them with a color that most closely describes each bird however, there is no expectation that they be a perfect match. There is much discussion on this top in the ASA forum. I highly recommend you join ASA so that you can review the discussions and ask questions. It's a wonderful organization and I can't understand why anyone wouldn't want to be apart of it.
I have been on the site, that's how I knew there was no description. I have been seriously considering which group to join.Thank you for all the info. I have no delusions of having good enough birds to show now, but would like to think maybe I could get some nice offspring with better color and when I get birds from a show breeder, I will have something to take them to. My girls are not quite laying yet, even tho my little man is giving his best. The eggs I have in lockdown now are from a show breeder, so I am hoping for something nice in there too.

I also looked around on the Serama Council of North America. Loads of info on there too. I spoke to Jerry by email a few times as well. He seems like a very nice man.

Aschenfire congratz on your eggs! That must be super exciting to get them from your own.

catwalk that is a very cool idea.

Time does fly! I remember the day these guys were hatched, and it seems like just yesterday.

LOL I should get eggs from my first babies in January?? (leghorns, plan on eating them, LOL)

Lots of instructions and variations of the design here! I get my cookie tins and light fixtures from a local rummage sale, and I clip cords from all appliances that I throw away. I made one with a cake pan before, using a cookie sheet as the lid. Works great, and it's nice and big.
Now THAT is really cool! Thank you for the link! I'm going to keep my eyes open for some cookie tins. My mother always gets some like that, but I never have. I'm sure Cost Plus World Market has them this time of year though! Thank you so much!

Lunar, that mille fleur is stunning though, I think very much worth working on!

The cookie tin is a container with a lid. The bulb goes inside the container, and the cord comes out a hole that I make in the side of the tin. When possible, I attatch the light to the cord inside the tin, but if I can't, I tape up the connection really well and make sure that it doesn't lay on the ground. A 13w bulb only takes the chill off, and if it's kept from touching the bottom of the container, shouldn't cause a problem. No reason one couldn't put it up on bricks if fire is a concern.

Lunar - There are a few breeders working on the millie fleur color. I was for about a year and have just this past week sold what I have, keeping only my show champion, a cock that I bred and does produce the color. The gentleman they are going to has been working on the color for quite some time and I feel will use these to better his color project. I will say that the millie fleur that I have bred did have a lot of excellent type in addition to the coloring. If you would like me to put you in contact with this person, PM me and I will have him contact you.

I just noticed that Harry/Harriet has gold/redish feathers coming out of his/her neck area now. That will make her much more interesting!

Otherwise, I think she/he has a muddled barred pattern. Is that bad?

Here is Egghead, the one I think would be partridge?? Would both Harry/Harriet and this one be partridge?

Since I just took pictures of everyone, LOL, might as well finish, here is Backie:

And Blondie

And the whole crew together

Sorry for the bad flash photography, always doing this kind of thing at night, LOL.

YER peeps are SO cute!!! I could just hug them and snuggle all night with them.

cluck-cluck, what you see now is by NO means the finished product. You will not know exactly what color they are till they are at least 6 months old and even then it can change.

REMEMBER PEEPS: TYPE FIRST then color. If you have no SOP [stadard of perfection] the most beautiful color in the world won't win for you..LOL

THANKS for the reminder catwalk about those tins! Such a simple but great idea! :thumbsup

I'm wondering if Seramas need room to strut? I mean, mine are currently in a cage that has levels in it, where they like to go to the top level and hang out right below the heat lamp. It is too short for them to stand up like a Serama should, and I'm wondering if that is going to mess with their stance? I have to admit, I just adore that at attention stance they have! Don't want to ruin it! As soon as the 2nd coop is finished outside, I'll be making them a roomy indoor coop for this winter.\

Oh, thank you froggie, LOL, thought that was my post there, LOL. Yes, I'm sure I won't have the best type either, but one can hope! Imagining the adult bird from my chicks is too enticing! But yes, I've heard the colors change as they grow, and even so, I don't know how much they change, so I'm still horribly curious,
