Amers d’Anvers

Pics
Ok, time for the answers! I'll mercifully put them in spoilers in case some late fellow wants to participate.
Most common poultry breed entered? Old English Game Bantams, at 4799.
Second most common? Call ducks at 3327.
The most common LF breed entered was Cochin at 965 but this was only a third of bantam Cochin numbers which were 2889. Second most common? Ameraucanas at 934. Duck? Calls, but Runners were second with 950. The most common goose breed was Sebastopol at 368.
The third most common breed was Silkies at 3066.
It's pretty sad how few large fowl there are. 7 of the bantams are up there in the thousands but even the most common LF doesn't make it that far.
Also, d'Anvers folks need to work harder. There were 900 d'Uccles but only 691 d'Anvers. They should be at least equal, imo.
Oh, by the way, the Old English numbers are kinda skewed because in the south they hold all game shows so they must be very popular there, but it's not representative of the whole nation, in the same way that the upper midwest CARRIES the waterfowl of the US.
Interesting! I was closer than I expected 😁 I don’t really get the obsession with game birds, but to each their own I guess! If I had more space I would be full on trying to show Ameraucanas—I just love their personalities—and maybe another breed that’s not as common.

I also agree that it’s surprising that d’Anvers aren’t at least equal to d’Uccles, but seeing all the d’Uccles at our county fair I guess I can see it. Out of all the bantams entered there was an entire wall of just d’Uccles, and only 3 quail d’Anvers. I would think a clean legged version of d’Uccles would be easier to show and keep!

Thanks for sharing!! That was super interesting!

Few updates: Fireball was doing his job. And so was White Hairy! 7/8 eggs hatched. (One was infertile.)

Queeny is a good girl too. Reserve RCCL out of 74 birds.

I have two nice little d’Anvers pullets. Unfortunately, I must sell the quail because despite her numerous other good qualities she has black feathers in her beard (I pulled them for show but the genetics are there.) It’s a real shame because she is becoming super friendly and loves clovers.
The blue quail is Weasel because she is very flighty and will weasel into the smallest places to get away from you. That’s why I took a pic inside. The quail tends to cling to you and sit on your hand quite sturdily, while I fear Weasel would run for the nearest wood pile.
I can’t bring Queeny to Ohio National even though she is so good. She is molting and she would neither look nor feel her best, so it’s just not worth it. SHE ALREADY MOLTED THIS SUMMER WHY 😡😡

One thing I’ve noticed about the quail is she has an extremely large and full tail. She has the unique quality of having 8 tail feathers on at least one side (I counted them on the picture, so don’t know the other side.) 7 is the normal number.
Weasel only has 6 but I think she is still growing one in.

Such a shame about the black feathers. She is gorgeous!
