For those wondering how to sex young quail, blue quail, etc d’Anvers by color… these are like 3-4 weeks old and I can already sex them.
On the left, you see the blue quail cockerel. You can see all the orange on the shoulders and back.
On the right is a female, though you can’t see much because I was taking this pic with my left hand.
Her shoulders and back are dark with yellow shafting.
Both sexes has have yellow breast, one of the most unique traits of the quail variety.

The quail project is struggling. The eggs are having good fertility now, but I struggle to hatch anything in the incubator. I’m having all kind of late hatch deaths, crossed beaks, and stargazers.
Also I’m trying to replace my cock with a younger, more vital cockerel with hopefully less issues, but the problem is I’ve hatched lots of pullets and three cockerels, two of which are blue quail which is essentially useless to me. I need lots of cockerels to pick from because last year, the few cockerels I hatched almost all had black in the beards, and the one I was going to keep ended up having stubs which I’ve never seen before.

I prayed for some an actual good hatch of d’Anvers and my prayers were answered!
21 chicks for a 66 percent hatch rate. Fertility was 95 percent, chick casualties/deformity was a mere 2 chicks of the ones and I didn’t include these in the above numbers.
15 appear to be quail so fingers crossed that I’ll get some good cockerels out of this.

Precious fluff balls!!! 😍😍😍 Are they your own stock or hatching eggs?

Okay more questions for you @Amer! How long until you know the quality of the bird for showing? Also, is this color a very dark blue? Or black with a blue undercoat? 😵‍💫 I’m generally good telling the difference but they are sort of looking both…

Even with my oldest growouts which are probably like 7 weeks old I haven’t a clue. Even with my oldest bantam Buckeye growouts which are almost five months old I still can’t make a pick. D’Anvers take less long because with an extreme type like they have it’s easy to find standouts… but I honestly have no idea.
Colorwise… I have the same struggle as you. No idea if it’s a blue or a black.
