An Atrocity Absolutely No Pictures

from a trapper's point of view

Any animal that dies of "natural causes" in the wilderness is ILL. They do not die of old age. An ill animal is a BAD pelt, usually with patches of fur missing or VERY thinned out. VERY bad for pelts. Sick animals have very little fat on their bodies...while it makes for slightly easier hide cleaning...it is by far NOT good for the pelt curing process to have so few oils left.

The goal of skinning is to preserve a fantastic hide...not keep the worst you can find.

That said...it is the time of year to LOSE over half of a hide's fur worth...nice thick winter coat gone, thinner summer coat with fewer soft under hairs and more coarse guard hairs instead to keep off the weather. Not a choice one would make if it were for the fur alone.

And yes, the head and feet are usually left on the animal...which would make it very easy to identify. There are too many natural holes in the hide on the head to make it useable and the feet are very abused and too tough many times for good fur.

This is probably NOT done for just the fur....even if it is just after shed

Poor pup. Keep your gun handy, mark it on the calendar & take a few pics...just in case, even if you dont want to report it this time.
If it happens again, you will have a record inform the authorities in your area. Sickos repeat the worst things they did when they get away with it.

Better luck to you on finding stuff on the edge of your property...like a $50 or a nest of those rare tortises ya'll have out there.

Uh, well, lemme just just come out and say it: I doubt it.

If you wanted to just feed the vultures, would you go to the trouble to remove the hide? Just lay the critter out. No need to skin it. Vultures will shred and feast on anything "still in the wrapper."

No offense, but I think you may be giving more credit to folks than they deserve. I know you are well intended and want to find some comfort in all this, but "natural," tree hugger folks that skin a dog - so it can go back to nature? Ponder that for a momnet....

Call me a pessimist if you like, but the reasons behind it simply reek of being nefarious. You do such a thing for some very deliberate, and probably disturbing, purpose.

My money says this aint the work of eco-greenie, "natural folks."

I'm with you there! I am a bit of a tree hugger myself, and I just can't see any normal person skinning a dog like and leaving it like that. It is the work of a sick individual and it would make me nervous to know such a person had been so close to my property.

Contrary to both current media sensationalism and political smolderings, this is a very good reason to own a hand gun.

It's effective when used properly, respected by all but the most hardcore socio-paths and it can be handy when needed most. A .357 Mag works for me.

Remember, "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away!"

No pet is safe if this is the earmark of the "beginnings" of a true Sociopath.
Mass/Serial Murderers start out as kids who kill or torture animals--- and they often keep a "trophy" so they can re-live the thrill of the experience whenever they handle it.

You need to report this-- the next stage in a Sociopaths development is to start hurting or even killing kids who are younger/small/weaker than them.

I know this sounds very alarmist-- but it is so much more widespread/prevalent nowadays--- it really can't be ignored.

I'll accept that. Thanks.
