Ancona Chicken Thread

Pics
Whitmore farm in Maryland had been breading Single comb anconas and they are good about replying to emails. http://www.whitmorefarm.com/
There is also a farm in New Hampshire but they are breading rose comb for more northern climates and a little harder to get ahold of.

'Tis true, we are at times hard to get ahold of. Between the jobs and the farm, it sometimes seems that we are spinning. Nonetheless, one does what one can.

To those who contacted us looking for Ancona chicks, we've just posted out 2013 ordering information on our website.

Cheers!

It might be beneficial to update your profile with your location so people have an idea how far the eggs would have to travel. Also whether they are single or rose comb Ancona. If I hadn't been a noob and had realized that rose comb Ancona existed, I would have gotten them instead of the single combs (the only ones Ideal sells). The Veronica Lake looks is cool, but when you live where it gets to -20F, smaller combs are a plus.

Yes, the rose comb is definitely a help on the severe weather. That is why we have them, too; however, now they are what I'm used to an enjoy seeing.

Hi , I've been on this thread here and there ove the last year. Mostly I lurk. Anyway my daughter decided that our Anocna is on her list of possible birds to take to the fair and I was curious if she is even quality enough. This is my daughters first year so I'm trying to get her to decide on one of our chickens that as close to SOP as we can find. I looked at the pics in the SOP book but their paintings so its kinda hard to tell. Anywho here is Speckled our Ancona.

Thank you

Thank you

I don't know the SOP but her comb is really small compared to my hatchery birds.

This is Zia, she has the smaller comb of my 2 Anconas

This is Yue, a month BEFORE her comb got big and she started laying.

I've got 12 Ancona chicks, as well as 12 Australorps and 12 Barred Rocks coming in a few weeks. It'll be our first go at raising chickens! We can't wait!

Her comb gets much larger, I think its small now due to winter and her just getting ready to lay again. I gave my flock most of the winter off from laying. Here is a pic from last summer.

Interesting! I didn't know their combs changed size depending on whether or not they are laying (after they mature). I know the color will change for that reason.

Mine kinda slacked on the egg laying front in January (only 19 from the 2) but picked up in February (42).
