The way I see it, there's several ways to go about it:

"Honey, have you ever read the fascinating history of XYZ breed?" (Playing up the SO's interest in poultry as living history)

Or, "Honey, you know, by adding XYZ breed, we can run very specific three way trails between them and collect meaningful data about the growth, rate of lay, longevity...this would be important and useful information for organizations like the SPPA and the ALBC." (Playing up that keen scientific mind)

Or, "Honey, I can't believe such a beautiful and useful fowl as the XYZ is critically endangered. I think you should take them up at least until their status has stabilized." (playing up that preservationist' leaning.)

and if all else fails, there's always the tried and true method:
"Honey, I stopped by the poultry show and this trio of XYZ followed me home; can I keep them?"

Should I ever start another breed, I think the last one would work best--in the spirit that it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission..

I am glad to find this thread and happy to see lots of people are loving their Anconas. I got my first one today, and I was worried it might be a bad idea!
We bought 6 relatively rare-breed, nearly grown pullets for only $50: 3 Ameraucanas, 1 Barnevelder, 1 Golden Cuckoo Marans, and 1 Ancona. They were transported in two cages, -3 to a cage, and the Ancona started picking on the other two badly enough that they managed to squeeze out of the cage to escape! Luckily, there was a big tarp in the car to catch the droppings.
We are quarantining these birds in our hoop house. The Ancona seemed to enjoy exploring and was no longer going after the other hens, but she decided to fly up onto this loose pile of stuff, knocking everything over and getting pinned between two layers of netting. When I went to rescue her, she totally freaked out, as though contact with a human was a fate worse than death.
I think our Ancona is going to provide plenty of entertainment and adventure. I just hope I'll be able to keep her from taking off somewhere!

Okay fellow Ancona lovers - how close am I to getting some eggs from my lovely AC? She is now 17 weeks old.

Here she is this past Sunday next to my Snow White, WL pullet.

Here she is a couple of days earlier next to the WL roo. She has started hanging around him ALOT. And she's going into the coop when he goes in and does his "love" call to Snow White.

I think between 20 to 24 weeks she should be really close if not laying already.

and if you hatch some eggs from her and that LH this is what you could expect.
pullet * not the Ancona*

If I had the room I would have kept breeding them, but I sold them all.

and they sold fast too.

I suppose they still lay the white eggs? I can't wait for AC to start laying. However it will be interesting with two white egg layers to try and figure out who is laying and when.
