ANGEL WING????

Thanks for all the helpful info everyone.

I have taped his wing with sports tape and I added a crushed brewers yeast tablet to his water and have started adding fresh grass and weeds twice a day.

We have two geese that have angel wings (that's actually how one got her name).
Both happen to be the females. Our have plenty of fresh greens, veggies, cracked corn, game bird feed, everything they could want to eat.
I don't know how it developes...I seen some links posted will have to check them out.
One is more pronounced than the other goose. They don't seem bothered by it, I know I get some looks from company asking if it's a broken wing...
None of the babies have ever developed an angel wing...

I think it's genetic in the sense that some creatures seem more predisposed to get it... but it's certainly not caused simply be a bad gene. I maybe see one angel wing per year out of 30+ goslings.

I'm concerned that one of my goslings has Angel Wing too! It's her (maybe him?) left wing and the feathers are still just growing out; she's about 9 1/2 weeks old now. The tipe of her wing where the feathers are growing seems floppy and droops outward. Her right wing appears ok.

I was told to put them on a lesser protein diet and they are eating something called Developer, which contains 22% protein. Is this too high?

Now I'm really worried!

According to The Book of Geese and Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks, goslings 4-12 weeks should be on 16-18% protein, and 13-26 weeks 16% protein. If they have access to pasture, feed as much as they can eat in 3-5 minutes once daily, if no pasture, feed that amount 2x daily. For ducklings 2-7 weeks 16-18% protein, 7-20 weeks 15-16%. You can add rolled oats, or greens to "dilute" the protein. Recommends free choice for 5 minutes 2x daily for ducklings.

Flock Raiser is 20% protein. Start and Grow is 18% protein. My local feed store carries a "poultry developer" that is 17% protein and "supplemented" with niacin, I have been adding Brewer's yeast as well. My Pilgrim gander seemed to be growing too big for his legs for a while, he just didn't have any stamina and one of my ducklings wings started to droop a little, so I freaked out and stopped the Flock Raiser and limited the feedings to twice daily once they were 3 1/2 weeks old. Seems to be helping. They are still growing like weeds, but the wings look okay and the little gander is much stronger/more balanced.

Well, it's been a few days and Gretel seems to be doing better. I changed her food immediately. I thougt I bought the right food - extra niacin and 17% protein, but I didn't look at the label (went on what the man at the store told me). I taped her wings Friday night and removed the tape this evening for a while. I'll wrap her back up tomorrow morning if I see the wings drooping again.

I feel horrible for doing this to her. Hansel's wings are perfect - not problems for him.

Thanks for the information; it was very helpful.
