Angry at the people in my life..

We all have our share of problems.. mines not such a biggy... but there is a little old lady down the street from me. She has a lovely vegie garden and one day when walking past I offered her some hay and poopy shavings from the night pens where my ducks sleep. She was delighted at the offer but INSISTS on paying for it.. No way I could charge a senior cit for fertilizer so she can grow her own vegies.

First time I dropped some off- she tried to load me up with vegetables- but I told her my arm was sore after carrying the bag down to her and I couldnt carry them all... so she offered money which I couldnt take at all. Now I just drop off the bags when I have seen her wander up to the shops since I know she isnt home. She keeps coming over and trying to pay me- but I keep explaining that I have to pay for petrol to take it to my block of land in the country to dump it- so she is saving me money anyway. She is such a lovely old thing- and I dont want to offend her by not taking anything in return for the poop... but I really dont want anything in return for it. I am just glad to be able to help my neighbours..

Now of course getting chickens or planting vegies with the plan to sell them in the first place is so very different, people shouldnt be expecting to get things like that for nothing IMO.
 
ducky- you need to let the little old lady give you something in return for the fertilizer. Even if you don't need anything, it will make her feel better about taking it. Perhaps ask her to save the produce from her garden that is wormy or too squishy to eat. You can feed that back to your chickens. That way she feels like she is helping out and you can feel good about feeding your chickens some fresh produce. Right now the "trade" is unbalanced and I bet she feels bad about taking your manure.

Perhaps she's got more than she needs, especially if she's only growing for herself, and would rather share it with you than have it go to waste?

I have a similar situation with my older neighbor. I bring over extra duck eggs, chicken and rabbit fertilizer, and other things that I know this older lady needs. Sometimes I try to sneak over before she wakes up and leave things on her porch. Later on that evening when I return home from work, I will find different things on my back patio and these things are from her. I know that it makes her feel good when she brings me things, because I can see it in her smile, so I accept them without a fuss. Just last weekend she brought me 2 full plates of food from her family reunion.

Please accept what she has to offer. It is her gift to you and that will make her heart feel so good.
 
Oh my....I have chickens simply because i love them. nearly 100 now...i cant stop incubateing!

Sure they are expensive to feed, but in the long run, are worth it. Gotta spend money to make money. Try some advertising for the eggs to get your moneys worth ,and in return....they will feed themselves. Have you tried the local news paper? Bullitons in stores , Eggs for Sale sign, Farmers market, and the list goes on. There are many ways to get the word out.

What we did, is spread the word. We had wayy to many eggs, and sold them. Friends told other friends, who told their friends, and so on. yea, people drive me crazy. Say, ya want eggs? pay for em. or help take care of the girls!

They can buy from me or buy in the grocery store. Doesn't matter but I'm not giving eggs away for free to freeloaders. Feed cost. However, I do show my customers appreciation by giving them free eggs every now and then.

No can do the farmer's market in Oklahoma. You have to get permits and go through lots of red tape. Then you have to keep them in a specific condition (ie refrigerated at all times), the list goes on and on.
