Angry at the people in my life..

Thats just the thing... she is over ninety- living alone on a pension and not able to feed herself on what income she has so grows the vegetables. Taking those vegetables from her would be taking food from her own table. I would rather her feel bad for me not taking anything than have her going hungry.

Take a little something from her to 'feed' her sense of dignity and self worth.

I understand where she is coming from.

Still, the one who really benefits from gifts is the giver, more than the receiver, IMO. I agree you need to find a way for her to return the favor. Can you ask her to darn a sock or embroider a pillow or something? There must be something.

As for the something for nothing folks, I would just say no, I don't care who they are. It's kind of like refusing an invitation: people feel obligated to give an excuse but there is no such obligation; "I'm busy" is plenty. Or answering the phone when you know the callee does not want to talk to the caller: "she is not available" is plenty. In case you can't tell, no one would ask me any more.

Don't give free to family that does not appreciate it. I would donate to the salvation army or any other food bank or women/children shelter.
Maybe eat the chickens if you are unable to sell them.

For the eldery lady maybe she would give some seeds she saved from her veggies? I am sure she will have something.Sometimes my neighbors pay for eggs, and other times I give the eggs and run away before they can push their money on me,lol, yelling *frebbie this time*. Usually they give veggies or baked goods at holiday...so we all feel good giving.

For family being all gimme gimme gimme....nothing till they learn to give from the heart!

X2 - I like the idea of donating to a shelter as I'm sure they'd appreciate it. Plus if you donate to a non-profit I believe it's a tax write-off in the US. And asking for seeds is brilliant - it's something that will take the neighbor a little time to do and costs nothing. Don't like gimme gimme gimme's ... not at all!

Do you remember the story about the little red hen? You might want to reread it. Also, have a few copies to pass out to the leeches that are asking for freebies. As for your extra chickens, have you posted a notice on the bulletin board at the feed store? By the way, extra eggs can be scrambled and fed back to the chickens.
