Animal attacked my Rouen...not sure what to do.

Pics
Yea, it is not easy for sure.

There is no way i can keep her out there all night so I brought her in after a little while and now she is eating as planned. She is very stiff and can hardly bend all the way over so no way can I release her. I a couple of her mates in there and they almost creamed her with joy or something, but I kicked her out and put the injured duck back in the porch where she ate more lettuce in water and drank a lot.

I was able to get her to muddle a bit outside as that is what they most like to do and I think that got her appetite back online. I am going to let her out tomorrow morning and give her the day. The other ducks go nuts when she is out there so we shall see how it plays out. She is a strong duck my goodness, I think that fox may be smarting...

They Jumped Her!

Alone Again!
It's sad she's alone, but she's alive! Get my point?

They hurt her. She is limping now. I knew it was too soon, oh well. Back a square. The bite is just above the leg about in the middle of the muscle. She wasn't limping but now she is, I think they hurt her when they attacked her. The video is short because of the language and the dropped phone...when I got the her they were both on top of her, I am not sure what the deal was...trying to kill the weak link?

And you are right, she is a beautiful duck. I have taken care of her before when she did not eat the first few days that i got her. After that she became a little piggie and ate everything, and once she learned to muddle it was all she wanted to do.

It was the muddling that got her eating today. So there was a lot of good from the day as well, I am grateful that she is eating and still fever free after 3 days.

Well, she is back in the porch and tired from the exertion and now she is sleeping, something I should do as well. I will let her out in the morning, maybe, depending on her limp.

What a day...lots of progress. :yesss:

Crazy burds. Always something. They always foil our best laid plans:(

Yes, and she is eating now so the effort was worth it!

:woot
Yes and she can see them now and be right up close if she wants to. Which I bet makes her feel a lot better.

I have two Pekins cooped up right now in a pen like yours. One is the friend and the other hurt her ankle. But the only way for such a hefty bird to get her swelling to go down is not to walk on it. But they sit right next to the fence and can still “snuggle” the rest of the flock. Which is cute.

You are making the right choice. Even though she hates it, ducks can be like sharks in the water. They smell the blood and attack. They can go after whoever is sick or weak. I hate that trait. But it is true.:hugs

You are right, it is their nature. I do not like the brutality of nature sometimes, however, there are lessons to be crafted.

I understand that in the wild she would have never recovered from the shock of the attack. The isolation animals do when hurt serves a purpose, it protects the flock as a weak flock mate is a target and that jeopardizes the whole flock. By putting her back in with some of her mates I was taking a chance as they have just started learning how to mate and the flock hierarchy is in constant flux right now, her being injured removes that competition. The flock dynamic that I am witnessing is really quite remarkable.

Anywho, i made a better friend tonight. She may end up living in the house...if she can't go back, I will not have them kill her. I can always order a baby Cayuga (My favorite) and get her a friend for the house pen...heck, it is almost built, I just have to make the changes to the outside area more permanent.
