Animal control is on its way...Update post 73...

Dudes and Dudets, There seems to be specific options based on your communities. If your in the country shoot the dog! But you also have the responsabilty to provide some secure inclosure. Negotiations with neighbors do work;dont rule it out. However if the dog is on your property and you own chickens shoot it.
If you live in a city governed community you may not be able to shoot the dog directly unless you can prove its destroying live stock or property. If you can shoot, shoot! Otherwise call the law, AKA Animal control. Document Document Document.
If you are truly are backyard chicken raiser in the city. It is approprate to involve animal control and security to protect your flock.
Some Dog breeds are prone to hunt and kill, but even foo foo dogs kill chicknes.

The other day my brother brought his prise dog out, and even under his assurance his dog would not attack the chickens,it went right for them. Even with verbal and phisical repremand it went for them!.
DOGS KILL CHICKENS NO EXCEPTIONS!

Actually, there are exceptions. Dogs with a lower prey drive that are raised with chickens can be trained. I had a silkie once that ran right up to my dog and shoved his head in the dog's mouth. The dog's only reaction was surprise followed by disgust.

The Lab we used to have and our current beagle would do ANYTHING to get into the chicken run just so they could eat whatever goodies I'd thrown to the girls that day (oh, and of course that oh-so-wonderful delicacy - chicken poop). I would go in search of the dogs to find them relaxing with the chickies pecking around them - no worries. And just the other day I went out to check on my girls who were free ranging and I caught someone's dog (a rat terrier) with one of my girls cornered - licking it! No feathers gone, no bites, just a rather unhappy, damp hen! So not all dogs are chicken killers.

That said, many dogs will go after chickens - they are just too much fun with all the noise, flapping, running, etc. We've been fortunate, but I wish everyone well with their dealings with dogs and their owners.

Thanks for asking. We have not seen him since he was picked up. I dont know how much AC charges the owner to get him back so he may still be in doggie jail.

I am hopeful that he is going to come home to a nice kennel

I used to to think that the smarter of us were here but now I am not too sure...

My Border Collie herds my chickens to keep them in the yard. (that was for the person who said ALL dogs kill) and secondly, The responsibility ALSO lies in the chicken owners. BUILD A BETTER FENCE so the neighbor dogs can't get in.

So sorry to read about this... I have neighbor dogs that are chomping at the bit to get into my yard. I am very scared for that day. So sorry, and if it were my dog, she wouldn't be free to roam where she pleased.
