With all due respect, I'm a bit offended by the "the smarter of us" comment. Who was that directed at? those who whose experiences have taught us that all dogs who have entered, have killed our chickens? Or those who are free ranging our chickens and shouldn't have to spend no small fortune to fence in their 30 acres to keep the neighbors' dogs out?

We, as chicken owners, ARE responsible for protecting our animals: by building secure coops and pens, etc. But part of our responsibility as chicken owners has to do with the way we choose to manage our flocks. However, we are not responsible for keeping the neighbors' dogs off our property. For some of us, the cost of fencing in our many acres sufficiently to keep dogs out is not possible. That burden should not be the chicken owners'. If it were, the law would state something like: "owners of fowl, horses, or cattle, must fence in their own property secure enough to prevent trespassing dogs from harassing their flocks". But instead, here, and in most places, the law states that a dog harassing livestock can be killed and any damages occuring to the flock is the monetary responsibility of the dog owner. Laws are there for a reason.

So while it's convenient for someone to fence in their 40x50 backyard with 6 foot high fencing (if, of course, it doesn't conflict with city ordinances), it's not that easy for those of us with many acres.

In addition, many of us don't just have chickens. We have other livestock that are easily contained as well. We do our part by containing our animals on our own property. Yet, we would have to convert our entire property into Fort Knox to keep dogs out.

The best part of owning your own property is the right to protect your property. Thankfully, we can just shoot mauraders who harass us. A bullet is only a few dollars.

Must be different there to here in Australia. I have 5 acres and we spent the money to 100% dog proof our property. My cousin has 85 acres and has done the same. Yes it costs a bit to out lay but it is worth it to keep your dogs in and other dogs etc out. We used dog proof wire fencing and pickets and it works great. Most property owners here will go halves with the neighbours to do the fencing as it benefits both parties. Granted we aren't allowed to shoot neigbours animals here either. Hope you find a way to keep the dog out of your property.

We put chainlink all around our property with a gate across the drive. It was the fence or house siding/driveway. I am really glad we have the fence. I had so many dogs come on the property before we put it up.I still have to deal with the other animals getting in,but atleast no more dogs. One morning dd told me to look at the big dog outside.I glanced and said," That's not a dog it's a deer." Lol,turns out that time it was a great dane. My dog got attacked one time by a husky in my driveway.8 staples in his leg.If it had been my mini pincsher or my kids...well you can imagine.

Before we got the fence and when I was brave I caught the dogs and called animal control to get them.Since the dog attack I realize I am better off by just keeping them out.The front is not fenced,so I have pepper spray and garden tools for safety.

I would hope a repeat chicken killing dog would result in the owner getting fined. If not I would probably catch the dogs and take then to shelters far away.

Best wishes getting this resolved.

If the my neighbors want to pay to fence my property so I won't shoot their dogs on it, I'll let them. After all, the dogs belong to them, and they are the problem. My responsibility is to keep my animals on my property. If somebody wants a dog and can't keep it at home, I guess they shouldn't have a dog.

I dont wanna live in Fort Knox.

(Nor do my animals)

I have 2 beautiful acres, wide open at the back of a holler. I like the freedom that I have and that my animals have. I shouldnt have to fence the neighbors dog OUT. He should have to fence it IN.

I am curious about what kind of fencing would keep dogs out? I can only envision miles and miles of stockade type fencing. I know I am a 'ditz' sometimes...lol.

The only fencing options for horse/cattle here are high tensile wire/ barbed wire or rail fencing.

You make some great points! I would have different expectations if I lived in a different area.

I truly think that each and every dog situation is going to be different because we are dealing with different dogs and different neighbors. When one of our other neighbors dogs (a little itty bitty chihuahua sized thing) turned into an egg sucking twit...she immediately rehomed him. He had been very welcome in our yard and would come play with our Lab. Then one day I found him happily chewing up eggs in the boxes. Twit!

. We brought it to her attention and she said that she didnt want him in the house and felt bad leaving him locked in the garage so she found him a better home. She had options and she chose to exercise the one that worked best for her and the dog. If everyone did that, we wouldnt have these threads.
