I just wanted to add my story and my dog. I have a 5 year old golden retriever I have had him since he was a pup. I just got chickens 2 years ago. He first sniffed the baby chicks when I brought them home, and I would set them on top of him and they would snuggle up in his fur he looked at them like "EWWWWWW what is that, get it away" but he would just sit there and let me stack chicks on top of him. I would sit in the yard with the chicks and the dog, in the sun just watching and the dog layed there as well not interested in hurting them at all, one day a have grown chick came up to say Hi to my dog and pecked him in the nose! The dog stood up squealed and ran off. My chickens are now completely free range and the dog is always outside with them, but he doesn't bother them one bit. I sometimes se him following them just to see where they are. I still don't have a coop that closes and I have had no predators yet, nor any dead chickens for 2 years, (keeping fingers crossed) til I can get money to put something together. So I think as much as the dog likes to let us think he doesn't like the chickens, he must be keeping predators away, because 2 years and no deaths, and no secure coop must be something, and I live in the country, large back yard facing woods, and a creek!!! So keep your fingers crossed til I get a "good" coop, because after reading all these threads about owls racoons, foxes, I'm starting to get scared. But good dog keeping chickens safe so far.
