Annie's thread- Five puppies! LOTS of PICS on page 10!

Robin'sBrood :

I don't understand, why would you need clamps? Doesn't the mama dog take care of the umbilical cord and placenta? Mine did...

Best wishes!

The clamps come in handy. With this being your girls first litter make sure you are there when she gets close! When that first puppy pops out she will probably turn around like "what is that!?" and will not know the clean the sac off. You need to rip the sac by the puppy’s face so it can breathe and cut the cord (dental floss and sterile scissors work fine). Also even an experienced female can get too rough with a puppy, happened to me my last little. She pulled just a little too hard when chewing the umbilical cord and it put a little tear in the tummy, the intestines popped out. The puppy was stillborn anyway, but that can be treated if they aren't ripped at all. So I always take the pup and clean it off, because losing a pup is sad

Just watch her temperature, that usually is a tell-tale sign that things are getting close. It will drop to about 98 within 24 hours of full labor.

Did not read all the way though just the beginning lol. Good luck with the rest of the pups!

You can give her cottage cheese, or chicken broth. They are both good.

2nd pup born at 4:51 third at 5:05 all girls so far, last pup sucked in some fluid, I think I got it out, she gave a good cry and Annie is still cleaning her at the moment, other two are in a box with a heat pad, as when she has another she will go the other side of the box, and then gets worried when they keep crying, the first one wants to suckle but so far she doesn't want them to, she will stand up when they latch on, otherwise everything going well, she has eaten all three placentas, I can't get to them before she does, she goes for them before the puppy, the last puppy was breech. the first two where head first.

Other then wanting the placentas first she is doing great, she hasn't over cut any of the cords the first pup tried to nurse on my finger, she has a sucking reflex on her. HOPEING FOR SOME BOYS! we have three people who want boys! So far none
Looks like she is ready for the next one

still three, she gets upset if I put them in box but is looking at me like can't you make them be quiet when they are in with her, watching for when she pushes for fourth, I know there are more in there, guessing three more.

seems to be taking a bit of a break after the three, she doesn't want them in the box at this point, but is ignoring them when they are in with her and crying, I didn't have a scan as my vet said it wouldn't be an accurite count, just would confirm pregnancy and we already could tell she was pregnant, the size of these I am thinking three more? We will see, watching for signs of the next so I can pull these three, she still hasn't let them nurse. I had to cut the collars in half for them as they where just to thick, So far we have Red=first born girl, blue is second born girl, and green is third born girl

Times are 4:28, 4:51 and 5:05, Last one is perfect as I was working on geting the fluid out instead of writting down a time.
she is looking at me like why do they keep whinning! It is just getting light here, oh and the cats are going nuts trying to figure out what the noise is.

Red keeps trying to go back in lol.
