Announcing the new BYC Reputation System: Ovations

"Voting Power" is actually pretty complex. The amount of "ovation points" each unique ovation vote gives is based on a plethora of factors including how many ovation points the giver already has. We then do a logarithmic calculation to determine how many points will be awarded.

Basically the easiest way to view it is this: The more ovation points you have, the more weight your ovations to others will carry.

If you candle someones ovation eggs can you see how much weight they have?

I can understand where you are coming from, having sat here myself and typed up long winded explanations on many aspects of keeping poultry, only to get that smiley face. However, I personally believe that helping someone becomes it's own reward. Sure, it is nice to see those ovations add up. But when I go away from here knowing that I helped someone save their beloved bird, or helped them understand the hatching process and why not to intervene, I feel just as good even though I received no accolades for this post. Just helping people is rewarding enough.

But what the heck......Here it is....

Exactly!

Giving is about giving....not to receive some kind of recognition, especially if you are asking for recognition.

One is not allowed to ask for Ovations on BYC.
For me, it's a personal thing and, in addition to encouraging me,
also helps me rate the quality of my posts. If I spend a lot of
time writing posts and no ovations show up. Something is wrong.
Either I missed the temper of the conversation, or got too
complicated or used the wrong literary voice. I go back and
re-examine what I wrote. I usually find I got too wrapped up in
stats trying to help and came off dry and haughty. I don't mean
to but it's how I write after spending so much time in bibliographies
and databases. Other times, I see I neglected the take time to see
how the person is really feeling about their birds. Sometimes, help
isn't enough. Empathy and sympathy need to be remembered. Then I
go back and either edit the post or write the person another one
in a more appropriate voice.
For me, ovations are a private thing. They encourage me and
help me write better posts. I think that is the best we can ask of them.
Best Regards,
Karen

Since someone may see only their own ovation count, it cannot turn into a status thing on the forum. That would only happen if everyone else could see them. I just never thought about turning them off; for the longest time, I didn't even realize one could do that, just didn't matter one way or another.

Quote: I think the onsite legend eggs should be gold. It's an extremely difficult
achievement that takes years of work to accomplish. Another nice honorarium
would be to award Onsite Legends a free Ongoing Membership to BYC.
Best,
Karen

How about changing the "Just Hatched" egg to green and making the "Onsite Legend" eggs gold.

Karen
