I gave my 11 week old girls some BOSS today and they had no idea what to do w/ it. Are they too young to know how to open them?

I don't think any chickens will try to open seeds. They just swallow them, and the gizzard does the work. Be sure to give them grit.

My chicks are 6 weeks old, just started giving them BOSS. Doing fine with it.

Young chickens sometimes don't recognize new things as food items. Keep offering it to them and they will catch on. Then they will DEMAND their BOSS every day, like mine do!

BOSS is black oil sunflower seed. I offered BOSS at 6 weeks too but mine wouldn't touch it until they hit 10 weeks. Even one RIRs still doesn't care for them too much...but the others enjoy it.

be careful not to give to much BOSS in the summer. I have heard it can cause issues when it is hot out. I add it to my scratch in the fall and winter but when it is hot out I only give them the scratch and only about 1/2 what they get when it is cold.

I feed my girls BOSS year round, but it doesn't get as hot up here as it does "down south." My girls will eat it, but are not crazy about it.
