Another goat kidding question

Congrats! I'm glad you were able to be there when they were born. That makes all the difference. Make sure they get up to drink- no more than a couple oz at a time if you have to bottle feed (learned that one the hard way

)

If they're dry and active by the time you go to bed they should be good. It doesn't take long for them to learn where the heat lamp is. You might consider putting up a little fence or something to give them a "safe" zone so the mom doesn't push them away from the heat.

It sounds like the worst of the cold is done with for now...not that -7* isn't butt-nasty cold but it is better than -20*

now, what about the pics?

all I am saying is if you CAN do the best job in planning weather related kidding times...if not then do the best you can to make them survive.

I am making one of those come this spring. I have that in my hobby farm mag. So, I will be making them. Still no babe's yet, but that makes me happy. She just has 2 more days of cold, and she will make it okay.

here is the pic of my daughter's new goats. the dark headed one is the male, the lighter one is female

Kelly,

Thanks for the compliment on our goats. I looked at your website and you have some nice ones too!!!

That's a picture of the barrel I was trying to describe in my post. I use a flood lamp bulb (45-65 watt) instead of a heat lamp bulb in them. They are harder to break and don't use nearly as much electricity.

The other night I was in the barn and there were seven 3 week old Boer kids in one 30 gallon barrel.

They were stacked 2 high.

Come and see us anytime. Land around here has gotten cheaper, but is still to expensive in my mind, since the recession hit.

I had to bring the youngest twin inside, took her to the vet, we almost lost her. My daugher is sitting with her in her lap, and she is now finally warm and perked up. Lilshadow how are things going?

No babies yet. I am hoping she will wait until next week or even longer. Her ligaments are gone, and I can touch my thumb and finger together by her tail. I keep checking. If she can wait until next week it will be so much warmer, at least above freezing. Congrats! on the babies, they sure are cute.

we lost our little female goat early this morning. After we brought her in, warmed her up she stared looking perky, moving around, still hard to get her to eat though. Late last night she took a turn for the worse. It is really hard to watch a little life come into this world and see the same one leave it. I have to admit I have been lucky so far with my livestock and have not experienced that until now. My daughter is devestated and says she does not want to ever do this again, just buy her goats from here on out, we will see. The male is doing fine, still outside with momma, laying right under the heat lamp with her next to him. Not sure why the female wondered away from them that first night. I wonder if there was more I could have done, pushed more electrolytes and such.
