Last week I received my shipment from Mt. Healthy - all chicks were wonderful. One however, had a deformed leg. Really bad too. Not praddle, but just twisted and contourted. Poor thing! I found her a special home though! She will have all the help and attention she needs there. I was afraid my flock would harm her. My son named her Krumm.

So today, got my McMurray babies. Everyone was great. All but one little girl, she is a Cukoo Maran.. same thing. Except hers were even worse. She had one twisted all the way to the back and the leg was nearst to her behind! She appeared spraddled at first, then I realized her legs were so contourted. She could only scoot on her tummy. He poor left leg is backwards from the joint. Obviously a birth defect... well, hatch defect.

I would have kept them, but would have had to separate them. Living where we do, I was afraid they would have no way to defend themselves against predators.... and Roosters!

The same couple that took "Krumm" (german for Crooked) decided that they wanted to take the new baby too. How lucky am I to have met them? They have one pet hen at home that is extremely gentle and not offering to hurt the babies, a heated hen house, a fenced and dog free yard to play in. Although I wonder if the little baby will be able to get around at all I think that they will manage to give her a good home.

God Bless Chris, Tammy & their son for taking on that responsibility.

Very happy with both my shipments. Kudo's to Murray McMurray and Mt. Healthy!

I'm so glad you found them a loving home- I'm new to the chicken world, does this happen a lot?

It's the first time it's happened to me. These were malformations they obviously were hatched with - so probably not as common.

More common though is spraddle legs - they can get spraddle legged if you have them on smooth surfaces such as newspaper.
