Hey everyone, I have another limping duck, "ducky" my buff duck, developed a limp yesterday, i have attached photos of her foot as well as a video of her walking, kinda, she wasn't very happy to be messed with first thing this morning, and she let me know it by yelling at me, I dont see any cuts on her foot, but does look like it's slightly swollen, shes usually the most active and happiest of all the ducks, and i noticed being very unsocial towards the end of the day, and standing with her foot up, possible bumblefoot starting??? Leg injury, foot injury, these little creatures are stressful sometimes!!!! Lol!!!Thanks in advance for any help

It doesn't look too bad to me. For now, I'd just keep an eye on her to make sure it doesn't get worse. You know, we all slightly twist an ankle, step on something that hurts for a day or two, etc, etc. Could have been a little argument between 2 ducks, etc. A limp like that will usually resolve itself in a day or two.

Maybe someone will see something that I don't, and you know your birds the best, so this is just my thoughts from what I see.

Beautiful ducks, by the way!! :)

She does like to fly off the bank and see how far she can get, which I hate, but ducks will be ducks, lol,, so maybe she did just injure it, she seems to be acting completely normal other than the limp, and she doesn't seem to wanna swim today, which is really odd for her, because she loves to dive, but its still early. I've done so much reading and have seen some crazy hurt duck pics, so I could just be being overprotective, lol, but i wanna catch it early if it is something. Especially because my ducks DO NOT like to be handled and I'm pretty sure they think I am a crazy axe murderer, with this huge duck menu, but little do they know, i don't even like the taste of duck!!!!! They run up to greet me at my truck, but as soon as i get out, they all take off like I jumped out with a running chainsaw and Jason mask!!!! Lol..and thanks, I am very happy with how my little flock has turned out so far, excited to see the adult colors when they come in!!!! I have seen them change colors so many times already!!!

Totally understandable! The ducks that you see on people's laps and allowing petting, etc, are few and far between! (and are usually single/loner ducks!) The majority of ducks are leary of people, so you are not alone. Mine tolerate me for food and water, but I can't handle or touch them either. I have 44 call ducks, and only 2 will come within 2 feet of me, for their special cat food treat. They all come running for treats or the water hose though! (I did get one to eat a piece of cat food from my hand when she was broody. Major accomplishment! LOL)

It looks to me like you are taking wonderful care of them. It does get easier, and you will stress less about each little thing. But noticing things early is always a plus.

Update: Her foot still looks fine, but she's stretching her leg way out before she takes a step, with a pretty good limp, i tried to bring her inside, the rest of the girls and boys sat outside the door of the house being as loud as possible, she was really stressed out being by herself, so I brought in her sister, so she could have a friend while inside, well, they just kind of fed off each other's stress levels, and honked for 45 straight minutes, so i brought them back with the rest of the flock, should I try and get her to the vet for x‐rays tomorrow?? she was looking better yesterday, but this afternoon she looks like its really bothering her alot!!

If you have the money, and time to get x-rays done on her, for it, but I'm going to "lean" on the side, that she likely has a sprain of sorts. Really all depends on the severity of the injuries too, I've had birds limp for two weeks, other for one day. It will usually resolve itself after time.

But, if you want to help "speed" the healing process, you may look into adding B vitamins to her diet to support healthy bone structure and growth, or to relieve inflammation and swelling soaking her in Epsom salt water. DMSO gel, is something I use to for lame birds, it helps reduce swelling, and inflammation, and provides several other benefits. You can get this as most feed or pet stores, I use the gel and slather it on their leg as needed.

Just so you don't feel like you are the only one....... We have this very same thing going on with two of our ducks. Foot looks fine, ankle is swollen just a little and warm to the touch.

Our ducks don't like to be messed with either, so it's quite the rodeo to doctor on them. I just started using the DMSO gel as Doctor 0 recommended, seems to be some good stuff for both animals and humans.

I has also penned them up in a smaller area with a pool to help reduce some of their activity to hopefully help speed the healing process. Ours are very active also and I am hoping it's just a sprain and nothing more serious. Good luck. :)

I am going to try and locate some dmso gel today. Does the b complex have enough vit b or do I need a different supplement?? Also, im wondering about selenium with vit E, do I just sprinkle that on their food?? And I was also wondering about durvets poultry power. I started using it last week, and ever since I have had hurt birds, just a coincidence???

TSC sells DMSO, by the way.

I would see no reason to give vitamin E or selenium, in this case.

Could you post the brand, and how much are you using?
