Another loss, thinking some aerial predator.

Nice setup you have there! I'm sure that was a lot of work. That looks pretty permanent, but I'm not sure I'm willing to go to the effort of doing all of that (esp. considering that it will be mainly my dad, not me who will have to do it). Also, like I said, normally they have cover, but something caused them to go out further than they normally do.

I do have to say that your birds are VERY well protected! I like your setup!

Thanks, yes, this is our "20+ year house" - when I was setting things up at the last house we knew we wouldn't be staying (slated to become "industrial" zoning) so the emphasis was on good protection AND portability.

I used the dog-run chain link kits like they sell at Home Depot- which can be pieced into various angles and lengths with a little imagination. No concrete or post hole digging- just used a few t-posts at key spots to anchor it.

When it was time to move, all I had to do was snip off the hardware cloth, roll it up, detach the chain link, roll that up, and then disassembled the frame with a few twists of the screw driver. At the new house we went 100% permanent for the main run. I still use the dog run bits and pieces to make separate pens if there's an injury (or whatever). Anyhow, I definitely recommend them- lighter weight than you'd think and was pretty easy to tighten by hand because the chain link itself isn't the super heavy duty stuff. The key was added hardware cloth (and the t-posts) - it worked pretty good.

Here was part of our portable arrangements at the last house. There are a couple of 6ft wide panels in there because they came with the property. The rest is the dog run materials (and the net over the top)

Something interesting that happened today, I saw a large number of turkey vultures flying. I had never seen them come around here before, though I suppose I knew that they lived in the area. Here is a picture of four of them in a tree 20 feet from the house:

There were a dozen at least circling and perching in the trees nearby. I wonder it that's what got my hen or if they're just here to get something else that's dead? Or if it's not related at all. Either way, interesting because I hadn't seen one before... and in such large numbers.
