I can't find my Golden Comet breed in McMurray. do they go by another name? I know someone out there will know. I really like my girls and I find them easier to tame down the RIR. They always seemed tense. These gals I have can be carried in one hand up in the air. They are used to it. Never do I endanger them. They are spoiled anyway.
Julie...the new chick

If I am not mistaken, then they are also called Golden Sex Link. I do not think that McMurray has the Golden Sex Link. They have the Black Star (Black Sex Link) and the Red Star (Red Sex Link).

I have one Golden Sex Link and she is a very good layer and very tame.

Gold sex links. Are they the gold ones or the red ones? I have a hatchery catalog which calls em the same thing even though they aren't. The red ones are also called red stars and cinnamon queens and red sex links. I have a red one named Strawberry Shortcake. She is great. I agree she is much more calm than my RIRs.

Great response! I will check out the sex link thing in the mag. My girls are a pretty golden. One is lighter than the others. She was my special little one for she was the runt. If ya call chicks runts. She always walks to her own tune and likes to hang with me where ever I may go. I think they are nosey too. But I like it. I talk to them, they are little beings with a heart and spirit. More like pets than egg makers. It was funny when I first got them because we got RIR at the same time. I sold them though. I couldn't give away all of the eggs. I hated just feeding my other animals with the surplus eggs. I give some away at chuch sometimes too. I ran an ad in the paper for the reds and got so many calls you'd think I has a sale on actual gold! I will get a photo in one of my messages when I figure that out. this is fun!

I researched golden comets and they are supposedly sexed by their color if it was a reliable source...I think the lighter ones are males and the darker ones are females, but maybe some females are light..I forget mine are still little so it will be a little while before I know..I'll get some pics later this week. What exactly does sexlink mean?

Golden Sex Links are the goldish orange and white hens. They are a cross of Rhode Island Red roo and Rhode Island White hen. They are different that the Red Sex Link, Cinnamon Queen & Red Star.

Sex Link means that you will be able to tell if it is a hen or a roo when they hatch. Unfortunately, I cannot remember at this time which is lighter & which is darker at hatch.

According to feathersite.com a Golden Comet is a hybrid sex-link between a white rock hen and a New Hampshire Red male.

"Red Sex-Links are the result of various crosses. White Rocks with the silver factor (the dominant white gene would produce all white offspring) are crossed with a New Hampshire male to produce the Golden Comet. Silver Laced Wyandotte crossed with New Hampshire gives the Cinnamon Queen. Two other crosses are obtained with Rhode Island White x Rhode Island Red, and Delaware x Production Red. These two crosses are simply called Red Sex-Links. Males hatch out white and, depending on the cross, feather out to pure white or with some black feathering. Females hatch out buff or red also depending on cross, and they feather out in one of three ways."
