Answer to the Delaware Dilemma

I was wondering about this tail ..... Is it "pinched," or acceptable? The hen on the right, who is a pitiful example of the SOP for a Delaware, is my very favorite chicken. She is the sweetest thing ever (like a puppy), and she lives in the Layers Coop (not the breeder pen). Anyway, the tail of the butt in the picture .... what do ya all think?

Walt said Quasi's tail looked somewhat pinched, both of these rear ends look pretty similar to me.
So, yes?

I would say probably pinched from the description of pinched, which btw is new to me as well. Ya know we're all gonna go crazy reassessing our breeder flocks because of this thread now..

I've learned a bunch more and it should be helpful on my culling this thread showed up in the nick of time. I've spent so much time looking at my birds comparing and I just got "The mating and breeding of poultry" book. I'm starting to really enjoy knowing what I'm looking for instead of guessing I enjoy the learning by doing theme and I enjoy processing them wow that was a learning curve very helpful since my birds are mostly all dual purpose. For me meat and eggs are important first looks like I'm going to be working on the paint job for awhile.....

kathy those are definately better than mine. I hope to get a good roo out of those eggs from you to pair with my second generation girls. I think their tails are way better than their mommas. The triangle shape is what we're shooting for if I remember...theirs are pretty close! Must have gotten it from their daddy. Their mothers tails were a bit more pinched. Maybe my younger ladies will throw some good genetics toward the tails. Gosh...I don't know how I'm gonna wait that long to see now with all this new info.....getting excited about future hatches already!! lol!

In the photo's...I will usually say this, because in person, they may look different. Oliver has the best body and head, but his tail is not right. Just talking shape now. Alexander looks a bit shy in the abdomen. Do the sickle feathers always look like that? Away from the rest of the tail?

Jacob is probably the best conformation of all the males with the exception that his comb does not follow the head as well as it should. I have no sense of size, but he seems to be the best balanced male in the pics I have seen. Overall a good bird! Have any pics of him straight on?

Walt
