Answer to the Delaware Dilemma

Quote:
That Chickens name (was) MONEY..
He belonged to Rick Vindike, Sadley MONEY died this spring. Have you ever seen a grown man cry? I have never seen a man get so attached to his prize bird. He named him MONEY cause he spent a lot of money on finding good breeding stock and settled on money for the flock boss..He was just setting up for this spring breeeding season , breed him this year and probably next 2 years get as many as he could out of him then he and I were going to campain him and treat him to show life and living like a king . Rick is a little busier than I am so I was going to get the show needs like pullorum tests done ready for show and show prep and helped him get feeds appropriate for that ect... he had a hen we were going to take out this year but decided to just wait, a set back but not detered. He renovated a huge dairey barn into a chicken set up, brooders hatchery heated pens ect....

we were all at work that day but a freak wind storm and poss tornadoes came out of nowhere. We were all a little worried what we might find when we got home, was the roof on the house still there? did the chicken coop blow away? I got home and everything was OK . But he got home , fo8und they might have taken the worst of it, some of his barn roof had blown off, money must have gotten slammed into the fence , he found him laying right against the fenceing, and one hen might have gotten blown around and died as well they had a choice to go inside but maybe they just got caught out in it. not real sure .
He spent some More MONEY and bought a couple more. so we are watching this new cockeral for next year , he would rather take the sert back , so hes still a couple years out , wants to earn his stripes then settle into breeding poss selling but keep numbers somewhat low and high grade. .

Rick also bought a few show new hampshires? Good looking birds, he planned and Im not sure how this goes but if you cross NH hen with Del roo you get del colored offspring, now I cant remember exactly how this goes but if you cross del hen with NH roo you get sex link..he knows what hes talking about but I didnt , sure enough right off the bat he got the sport , this was befor he bought the new birds.

So no its not my breed of choice, I a determined Australorp breeder. No easy feat, few if any top breeders here. an APA judge freind of mine has set me up with some people but there is a lot of work to be done on this breed, APA freind kind of wants me to work on a different breed but like I said Im determined. Ive got some blue ribbons behind me and a BOB but want to move up so working with a few breeders next spring, one has east coast champions. I am interested in Dels, Maybe someday I will have a few. The judge and Rick will probably wear me down, the birds are beautiful and maybe they will wear me down.

Sorry to hear that Money came to such an untimely end. He was a very handsome rooster!

You are doing it right! It is the only way to come out with a good Del. You have great bodies on your birds, so it should not take a long time to get them right. Then play with the color.

Crackpots tend to put the cart before the horse. You might end up with perfect color only to lose it when you go for conformation........wouldn't that be terrible?
BTW: The APA Secretary just sent me the $1000.00 bounty check for signing you up. Thanks! It will be the best money you ever spent.

Think about putting the horse first this time, it will make your life a lot easier. Mine too, if you want me to help you.

Shoot, Walt, you survived the race? Where you gonna spend the $1,000.00? I think you should split it with me, after all, you wouldn't have it without me, crack pot or no!

You KNOW I want you to help, and you KNOW I will be an obedient little crack pot and go for shape first. It's why I sent you the pics of my hens, so I could see if you agreed I had at least some to start with there.

Actually no....not a newbie, but still learning. When I was younger, I would go to shows and find the oldest person I could that was not senile and pick their brain about chickens. I was fortunate to learn things from some true greats in the poultry world. I would highly recommend reading some of the old poultry books. There are things in there that you don't hear about these days. As an example they had a lot of ways to deal with diseases that would be considered "green or natural" today. There is a lot of old poultry information that has been replaced by fads and "easier, more modern" ways of dealing with poultry. That old information is still viable information and you will not find it in modern publications....I'm not sure why, since it works.

Walt, just wanted to make sure you didn't miss this post/question, it was a couple pages back before the weekend...

Over what mountain? haha How are you raising birds in Oakland? Yes, I am in Santa Rosa. "The Chosen spot" according to Luther Burbank.

Mountain, hill, it's all pretty much the same.

I'm from a pretty flat part of TX so anything bigger than a bump is considered a mountain to me!

I was fortunate enough to stumble across a decent sized plot of property within the city limits, we purchased last year and now I actually have room to expand my flock(s)!

Question for you Walt- how often to you see Delawares represented at shows in or around the Bay Area?

Yes, I survived, but it was too hot for such things. 1000 miles of driving in 95+ degree weather most of the time. You don't get any of the bounty money, but I'll tell you how to do the secret handshake.

I still owe you the Del critique. I will do that in the next two days.

I think Jeremy asked me if I see good Dels at the Western shows. No, not usually. Most of the good ones are in the East and Midwest and as I said Columbus and Indy will have the best ones to look at for good type and color.
