Answer to the Delaware Dilemma

Quote:
The Paso show is a small show and it was down by 240 birds. There were 850 there. Stockton is about the only show with a fair number of large fowl and probably no Dels...unless someone here enters some. The largest class of large fowl will be the Orientals. (200+) There is a lot of interest in LF now, so I expect the LF numbers to go up in the next couple of years.

No Delawares at all at the Stockton show Walt? Well shucks...

A couple of us here on BYC who live in Northern, CA are planning on making a day out of it. I'm excited, it'll be my first bird show!

If any Dels are shown in Cali, that's where they will be. there is more LF shown at Stockton than any other show in the West. It is a 2000+ bird show.

I didn't realize how large of a show it was, it really will be an all day event! Is it fun judging something like that? I don't think I can even fathom that amount of birds, let alone having to pick #1.

Well, rats, Kathy, I wouldn't drive that far either - if it were closer I would just to see good birds, but that is a long way.

It looks like it's up to us to start showing really it looks like you just have to cage train them and get then fit to show.....just what I need to do is fix a section of pens up to get birds ready to show...my husband will not be liking that though I have been trying to cage train the Rocks. I need to set the cage up on a table like they are at a show after a few times they don't seem to mind now that it's a little cooler I might do it daily. My honey said no way was he washing chickens I'll have to get my niece to help

It is an all day event....or can be. Judging a huge show is just a lot of work, it is beyond the fun stage most of the time. I am sure that a new judge would think it was fun. The expectation is that you judge 400 birds. That is pretty much a full day on your feet and bending from the waist. OK...it can be fun in a way, but it is still a lot of work. I have judged shows where I judged 100+ pullets of one breed that are the same color. Think about that!! Especially if they are white.

Coop training is a must to do well in a show. All those white runner ducks at Paso were mine. I was just training them, as the judge they had doing waterfowl doesn't really know waterfowl very well. When I heard that he would be a last minute replacement for the announced judge, I rounded up young birds to get them used to the cages and crowds. They will be ready for the next show at Ventura now that they have experienced the trial by fire of a poultry show. Runner ducks are pretty nuts even on the best day.

Oh those wild ones were yours..when I walked by the cages they were not liking it too much. I saw the judge get the SOP when he was over on that side now I know why. I would think being a "steward" could be very educational I know even though I've been around horses all my life I always learned more in the ring than the stands...

Yes, those were mine. lol The experience did them a lot of good, but they will still be as crazy as March hares for a while longer. I guess he could not find the right spot in the SOP since he gave a white Call with black in the bill a res champ Call. Black in the bill is a DQ with any white duck male. I had fun, I don't care, but I will let him know about it. Being a clerk/steward is the way to learn. Some judges don't talk much when they judge though. If it is a Calif show and you want to do that let me know ahead of time.

Off to the local JC to teach a class on chickens.
