Antibiotics will soon require vet prescription

Antibiotics are OTC in Mexico. I imagine a lot of road trips in the future for flock keepers.;)
living near the border I know lots of people that go buy stuff. But You have to have a prescription if its required. to come back across.

Course There is that whole language barrier. Some of their common names for the drug are different on the package than ours... and not always are the ingredients on the back... But if you know the ingredients they should all be witten in the same language... Latin.

Many Mexican companies sell mail order. But I worry about the standards of manufacture in Mexico.

I still don’t understand what the poor small swine, sheep and cattle operations are going to do.
That’s who those ABs are marketed to and have been for decades.
Feel bad for them, but my pet hen isn’t worth thousands of dollars either.

“It will cause a little bit of difficulty because producers who want and need to use antibiotics are going to have to work with their beef cattle or livestock veterinarians and develop a veterinary client-patient relationship in advance of any disease issues,” said Joe Paschal, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, Corpus Christi.

Paschal recommends producers should, if they haven’t already, develop a relationship with a local veterinarian to be prepared for these changes. People should also be aware that these laws apply to companion animals like horses.

“This means that your veterinarian knows who you are, knows the kind of livestock you are raising and what you are doing with them, understands your management, and that you agree if they come out to diagnose an illness and use an antimicrobial to treat a disease or illness, you will follow their directions including dosage, duration and withdrawal,” he said. "

No need, just buy from stateside gamebird supply websites, or buy fish antibiotics.

Just a little side note. One night I was sitting talking with the pharmacist who came into our facility back in IL to do monthly audits on med orders.

We got to talking about the rising prices of drugs and how people were traveling to Mexico for their prescriptions. A steroidal nasal spray that I paid 35 dollars for at the time was being sold in Mexico for 7.50.Manufactured by the same company in the US and packaged in the same packaging. I asked him how they could do that. He nodded and told me I was right. They were selling it that cheap because Mexicans for the most part were poor and didn't have the money to pay 'US' prices. All I could do was shake my head. Very few rich nurses around.

I also speak from experience concerning the ability of people to get prescription drugs legally or illegally if they really want them. I did a stint as a temporary nurse at a drug rehab center in a big city. It was an eye opener that stunned me into silence and trust me, that takes a lot.
