Antibiotics will soon require vet prescription

Pics
You take a chicken to the vet here and they'll charge you more then a dog or a cat visit and then they'll prescribe you some nonsense cr@p that does nothing to help.
And I'm in the country with farm vets. I'd image city vets are even worse.
Do you really think a medical doctor who has taken an oath will prescribe worthless drugs just for money? That's horrifyingly sad.

I can guarantee some would and do.
I can also guarantee some doctors will prescribe pain killers to people and call it good without giving you an explanation of why you're having the pain.

For what reasons do you consider it necessary to take a chicken to the vet?
Now, very few.
In the past injuries that I could not cope with myself and a case where a hen had broken an egg inside. I can sort that out myself now.
Not everybody puts a dollar price on their birds. For many here they are pets.
It's easy for those who have experience with treating sick and injured chickens, if they treat at all, to heap scorn on those who value their birds enough to pay vet bills and have little or no experience treating such things themselves.

My cousins wife is a vet and that whole practice knows very little about chickens. Unless it’s an avian vet it’s a roll of the dice for the most part. She’s asked me all kinds of questions and I know the prices they charge which are crazy! For a chicken. People are totally nuts.
Vet care here particularly for livestock is very cheap.
The vet I use was trained and practiced as an avian vet.

Slippery slope you’re on. Are you calling chickens livestock or pets?
The growing trend of “fur babies” and treating chickens like humans is absurd. Granted I’m not “heaping scorn” on anyone who is too soft hearted to cull a constantly sick (poorly bred, threat to the rest of the flock) bird. To each their own.

I think you're on the wrong forum.
This forum is packed with wanna be chicken momma's who love their little fluffy butts.
This forum is very actively promoting the getting of poorly bred birds that are likely to live very short lives and suffer numerous health complaints.
You may think it's crazy; I definitely do.
How do you think chickens should be treated?

Well there’s only a handful of illnesses chickens get that could/should be treated with antibiotics and of those most are preventable by the keeper.
I think they should be treated as livestock. Treating them as pets and applying animal laws to chickens like companion pets is definitely a step in the wrong direction. We don’t need more rules or government regulations. People should learn to think for themselves.
I do agree overall that the antibiotics without a vet prescription won’t do a thing though. All the big food producers have vets on staff that will continue to allow the use of them in bulk while the backyard chicken owner is left without much.
It’s really just another feel good measure.
I’m just amazed at all the surgeries and medicine recommendations on this forum. For one there’s no way anyone has done and or dealt with all these issues. If they have I sure as hell wouldn’t listen to them because they obviously don’t know how to care for their animals and prevent sickness.
