Any artists out there?

I lost over 2500 photos recently...yeah, supposed cloud backup failed. Anyway...I love to draw & paint, grew up finishing dad's woodworking. I can't do people well, but animals turn out OK. Was painting people's pets or wildlife on benches we sold at craft shows, and painted various birds on sticks, mostly Cardinals & mini swans for desktops. Here's a photo that survived.

Sorry to overwhelm you but my original quest with the tagging of people was to get feedback on this shading... any critiques/tips?

Imaginary light source is in the upper left corner. No light coming from in the pumpkin, I don't think I can handle that much shading confusion yet.
First, this is a good start so please do not take my critique badly. If your light source is upper left the stem is shaded pretty well but the rest is a bit off balance. your darkest shadow is by the bump at the top left and that should be the brightest spot. Also your shadows are very much the same tone through out whereas they should be getting darker as you move further from the light source. You have no shading inside the cut outs and no shadow of the pumpkin itself on the background. Do not be afraid to go outside the lines. And please, again, do not take this as saying the drawing is not good and don't get discouraged. Perspective and shading can be tricky even for experienced artists but done right they can add a lot of life to your work. I will try and post a painting where the shadows make a difference, if con find a pic of the one I have in mind. Keep at it and it will become more intuitive.

I could not find the Pic I wanted to post. This is a treefrog painting I did for a show. the tree is purposely left washed out and not detailed much to keep the focus on the frog and the shadow is minimal because of the angle of the light, but where there is shadow it is represented by fairly subtle darkening of the colors and the deep shadow under the body that help the frog look like it is 3D. I don't know how helpful this is since it is color and supposed to be very bright light but I hop it shows the idea that the shading can go outside of the picture, or at least the main subject of the picture.

I can fix that, I'll take another look at it later.

I hadn't thought about that, thanks!

I am planning to leave those alone until I can figure the rest of the pumpkin out :thumbsup

I am so jealous of those hair drawings. Teach me your ways please lol
It's actually so easy to make hair look great once you realize how to draw it! Look at pictures of hair and see where the shadows are and where the highlights fall on the braid, head, bun, etc. I recommend starting with braids, they're also the most fun imo. Also drawing a high bun from the side is good. The trick is finding where the shadows and highlights are, then you can make your hair look really good. Start small so that you can focus on the details, then get bigger. My first drawings were HORRIBLE but I was determined to get better before quarantine was over (Lol that never happened), even if it looks bad keep trying!
Love the barn swallow!
What kind of pencil do you use?
Wow! You are an incredible artist!
I don’t see no poult!View attachment 2362099

Wow! The shading is excellent!
For the pencil drawings I use a regular pencil, it's the yellow Ticonderoga ones with the pink erasers. For the blue hair I used pastel pencils.
