When working with mite resistance it is all about Genetics. I will offer queens in 2011/2012 that I have bred from Queens I have chosen and come from great Mite resistant bloodlines. Also most package supplies are in the South or the West and finding locally raised/bred queens is a awesome find if you can. I found a beek in the same county as me that has been breeding his bees without chemical treatments for 10 years. My two hives now are currently housing 2 Italian x queens of his.
Having bees in the City can actually work out better than having them in the country/rural areas like where I'am. Here we have to worry about pesticides/herbicides that are being sprayed on fields. And have a lot more in the way or predator problems. It is up to you. My advice would be READ READ READ....this is for anyone wanting to get into bee-keeping. Go to your local book store...or Barnes and Noble and browse the bee books. There are also several good online forums. If anyone is interested PM me and I will send you links.
