Does anyone have bison or yak? I love the looks of both and would love to have them. I also love that you can breed the crossed heifers back to either parent to introduce new colors/new blood. Does anyone have experience with them and can anyone offer pros and cons?

I don' thave any experience with them but we have a neighbor down the road who raises yaks - they are so cute. Especially the spotted ones when they are babies! We just noticed another guy has a buffalo roaming his property - never even knew he had one until like 3 days ago!

Here is a link to their website if you want more info

They have a beautiful piece of property.

I don't have either but had to say my family LOVES bison meat. I just purchased another 20 lbs. We eat it weekly. All I know is they are VERY big and need big fences.

none here but down the road there are two large herds of bison. they are so yummy and neat to watch. my son has been begging for a pair. sure, we'll stick them in the front yard with the goats. only kidding of course.

I know a lady who owns lots of bison if you want a link to her website/journal let me know and I will find it for you. She is an awesome lady! Has lots of pictures and you can learn a lot from her.

Cool. I know there is a yak herd in our area and they cross yak with cattle. I was watching the news about a dog attack and saw bison in the background. It would be cool to cross bison and yak, you could call them bisak or something, they would probably be lean meat, wooly, and colorful. I have been wanting yak because they are healthy for you, you can make yarn with their hair, and milk them but others say they are agressive.

I have always wanted a Yak....does that count??

I saw a special on Nomadic Mongolian horse herders many years ago and they were riding Yaks, and using them as pack animals.
I have been in love with them ever since. I love their bushy tails and overall fuzziness.

I don't think Yaks are aggressive since they are used as draft animals, Bison on the other hand have always been wild and are known to be aggressive and HUGE. I don't think I'd care to have a Bison.

I don't have either but have known a lot of people that raise bison. They are huge, need a lot of feed and can be very aggressive. They don't respect fence boundaries either.

That said, there is a lot of profit in them and the meat is super-healthy for you. When crossed with cattle they are often referred to a beefalo.

I think if you were to just raise one or two you could probably pen raise them, although that is not their nature. They were migrating plains animals, after all.

My sons' friend's grnadma raises them
