First, thank you for asking a question like this. So many people would just let it slide and do nothing.
Now for an answer. I say an answer because many will not agree with me and will have their own answers. You have an opportunity to use situations like this to witness to others. Use this as an example of what a Christian should not do. This is why I do not belong to a denomination. I am a Bible believer and a teacher of Right Division.
In studying scripture outside the claims of denominational rules and practices I discovered that men will always try to maintain control on mine and your lives through religion and not scripture. Look at America. For over 300 years we, as a so-called Christian nation, have redefined Christ, God, and the biggie...SIN. Sin, what is it? Will it send you to Hell? If so, how much does it take? Lets look at a few of America's favorites.
Billy Sunday, a famous preacher in history, preached on the sin of drinking alcohol. I always wondered if God used a Breathalyzer to determine if you go to heaven or Hell. And does God check your passport to see if you are American or European since we all know that those in Europe drink wine like we drink water and it is not a sin to drink wine in Europe.
How about the sin of tobacco? I've heard preachers say that tobacco will send you to hell, but when I asked one if a pack of cigarettes would be enough to stir God's wrath or maybe one puff I could not get an answer.
Have you ever noticed that preachers in America have no problem with the sin of gluttony? I once asked a preacher a question. My oldest son had just accepted Christ, in the manner of the church I was attending. He was told what to do and what not to do to keep his salvation. I asked the preacher if my son would go to hell if he died on the way home if he stopped off for a beer and then had a wreck and died? The preacher said yes. Well, I said, How about if he died after a big meal at McDonalds on the way home. The preacher said, "don't be silly."
You see, we have a high opinion of self and a mistaken opinion of Sin. What is SIN?
I John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
Churches always use sin as a means of control and forget Christ.
Romans 10:3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
We've taken sin out of the picture. So how are we saved?
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
What do I do if someone comes along and claims that I have sinned and am going to hell? I drank alcohol, smoked a cigarette, ate too much, and had long hair? You tell them that by the blood of Christ your sins have all been washed away. When Christ was on the cross all my sin was future and he died for those sins, therefore all my sins are forgiven, past, present, and future. Nothing can separate me from Christ.
Romans 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
So, what should you do? use it as a witnessing tool. The blood of Christ is the answer.
