The the further future I may breed Bengals and rescue stray kittens. Is there anything I should know before breeding purebreds (I never plan to breed mutts because that are millions that need rescued)? Tips and experiences are appreciated. Thx,

I would join Bengal specific FB groups and forums and read, read, read.

Finding a mentor to help guide you is the best way to learn--so reach out to people.

There's also got to be a breeder's club you should join.

Be aware of any genetic issues, and genetic testing that's available.

Keep your rescue animals separate from your breeding animals to prevent the spread of disease.

Be sure you have people who want to buy kittens before you start breeding. I don’t know how many people want kittens where you live, but here we have more kittens than there is a demand for them.

The kittens often end up in an asylum. And the asylum can’t sell enough kittens.
Common advice is to sterilise the cats.

Breeding purebreds and rescuing kittens is probably incompatible. You can do one or the other but not both. Breeders are very careful to keep their cats away from cats that might expose them to disease. You can't do that if you have rescues on the premises. Also, with your purebreds showing them might be a good idea.

I have a good friend that Breeds Ragdolls. I have another good friend that breeds Leonbergers (dog.) Both friends are well known, registered with Leonberger Club of America and Ragdoll Catery. Both have been breeding and SHOWING since the 90's. You have to show to prove via titles, you have excellent breeding stock. You have to get them tested. It's expensive. At one point I actually considered it but it's a huge commitment, upfront investment, full time job. Considering what both cost, it's tempting. But both friends are not even remotely in it for just the money. They have to travel to shows which is expensive. They both will "rescue" only purebred and their own products back. They both have enormous homes/property. My Ragdoll friend has a fully functional apartment home sepererate from her main home for the "papas." You have to learn about genetics, color, pattern, Points (Ragdoll,) breed for personality as well as beauty and breed standard. I can go on and on with what my 2 friends puts into this but I can also admit there are "backyard breeders," who don't do it ethically and don't work as hard as they do. Yet, those people are always known by the tight knit community of ethical breeders. I know I just sounded like I'm telling you not to do it but let me just say, if you're committed, you need to at least go to a show and meet other breeders so that you can have one mentor you.
