Any experience with Pomeranians?

When I was a kid when the heartworm meds just came out, we were giving our dogs the preventive. We got a new dog that had been a stray and when we gave him the heartworm preventative, it released the heartworms into his system and killed him.

So I have always been terrified to give a dog heartworm meds until I was sure they didn't already have them. Maybe the meds they used in the 70s were different, but that left a real imprint in my mind.

So be careful about that.

There are all kinds of cases where collies and herding dogs have problems with ivermectin. The ivermectin for cattle... even the small dose you are saying is about 30X the dosage needed to prevent heartworm. If you are going to use it, you need to mix it with vegetable oil to dilute it. Also if the dog did have heartworm and you gave them ivermectin, yes the worms would die but the dog also may die because the worms break up into pieces go into the dog's blood stream and can cause blockages. You should never start any dog on heartworm treatment unless they have been tested to see if they have them. If they do and you treat, the dog must be kept very inactive for weeks to prevent this from happening, depending on the dog that may even mean a crate.

I could post numerous sources on the internet , from vet's , vet articles, etc.. but have found in forum's like this it's better for you to do the searching. Just put collie and ivermectin in a search engine and see what you come up with. Also "using cattle ivermectin for dogs" You could find a few threads on here too if you search, this topic has come up before.

Same thing with the holistic treatment for heartworm, do the research online, there are a lot of products. I'm not going to promote or push anything... the info is out there if you want safer options for your dog.

My problem with the meds is that they are not preventing heartworm but killing the worms when they are first small so they can't grow. So even if your dog doesnt have heartworms you are giving them a little dose of insecticide every month whether they need it or not.

My main issue with your post is that you havent done the research.. it's not safe for all dogs and when you post something like that and a bunch of people read it, they may go give their collie mix some and end up with a dead dog. Please just put a disclaimer with that advice....

I can appreciate that you feel strongly, but I do not appreciate being attacked. I gave my experience and with all things on these boards, YMMV.

Just because something is "Holistic" doesn't make it safe for all. Obviously you have a different experience than I. Super! Share it, but don't attack me. There is not a thing on this planet that is safe for all dogs, holistic or otherwise.

I thought Hoof and Hen did a very fine job of pointing out the possibility that the preventative could release worms into the system and kill the dog. A very good point, I thought.

Get off the Ivermetin. Stop the bickering.

We will have to move her appointment to Friday. Someone in my stepmoms family is on a respirator, and Monday is the day...

I wasnt attacking you , I asked only that you do some research. I was responding to your question that you had never heard of it not being safe. I also did not say Holistic makes anything safe for all. My point was please do research before giving your dog or any pet something, what's safe for one, may not be for all. I also posted previous to Hoof and hen about giving ivermectin when a dog has heartworm already could kill it. so I'm not sure what you were saying there. I'm not promoting using any drug or holistic approach , just research your alternatives from many different sources before administering for the safety of your pets.

Sorry Zahboo, I was worried about the safety of your dog, glad you have an appt. Hope she's okay and you find a treatment that works for you.
