Any experience with Pomeranians?

Not a single cough since we took it off. She got her hair cut today. I know some people hate having poms shaved, but when you have a dog that is attracted to mud puddles like she is, its best to shave her.

Both my Papillons (tiny breed, too) did this. The vet explained it as spasms next to the trachea. It frequently happened when they were excited...it always passed and was never a problem.

I miss my little tiny dogs!

Please be very careful when recommending this for dogs. Certain breeds have severe reactions resulting in death from Ivermectin, collies and toy breeds being the ones I have heard of most.

There are holistic methods of treating and preventing heartworm that are pretty cheap, do some research before using anything.

I've suspected kennel coughs. The only thing that nags me kn that is that she's had it for a while. All cases of kennel cough have either dissapeared over a month or two or they would have escalated past what Grace is having. She coughs when we play rough and when walking, she tugs. This sounds like the trachea issues.

I would have to ask about using other things besides prescribed. I would be terrified of doing something without knowing the risks. Thanks for all your help

I have never heard of a dog having problems with Ivermetin. It is what heartworm meds are made from. I am curious, which holistic meds were you referring to?

There are all kinds of cases where collies and herding dogs have problems with ivermectin. The ivermectin for cattle... even the small dose you are saying is about 30X the dosage needed to prevent heartworm. If you are going to use it, you need to mix it with vegetable oil to dilute it. Also if the dog did have heartworm and you gave them ivermectin, yes the worms would die but the dog also may die because the worms break up into pieces go into the dog's blood stream and can cause blockages. You should never start any dog on heartworm treatment unless they have been tested to see if they have them. If they do and you treat, the dog must be kept very inactive for weeks to prevent this from happening, depending on the dog that may even mean a crate.

I could post numerous sources on the internet , from vet's , vet articles, etc.. but have found in forum's like this it's better for you to do the searching. Just put collie and ivermectin in a search engine and see what you come up with. Also "using cattle ivermectin for dogs" You could find a few threads on here too if you search, this topic has come up before.

Same thing with the holistic treatment for heartworm, do the research online, there are a lot of products. I'm not going to promote or push anything... the info is out there if you want safer options for your dog.

My problem with the meds is that they are not preventing heartworm but killing the worms when they are first small so they can't grow. So even if your dog doesnt have heartworms you are giving them a little dose of insecticide every month whether they need it or not.

My main issue with your post is that you havent done the research.. it's not safe for all dogs and when you post something like that and a bunch of people read it, they may go give their collie mix some and end up with a dead dog. Please just put a disclaimer with that advice....

I think you're right. If she's had it for this long, it would be much worse, or it would have killed her by now. Try getting her a harness, and attach the leash to that. You can put the collar back on her if you want, just not too tight and don't attach the leash. Also, leave off the flea collar, they can sometimes cause respiratory problems.

Also- I once asked a vet about ivermecin, I wanted to know if you could give a dog the ivermecin from the feed store they use for cattle/horses/etc. He said you could... but it is too hard to get the dose right and you would probably wind up killing your dog. So its better to just use the heartworm meds from the vet.

My Pom, Peaches, does the same thing when she gets all worked up. We call her "Mrs. Piggy" because she sounds like a little snorting pig. We have worried about it and taken her to the vet, but they could not do anything about it...they said it was common in Poms and indeed was a collapsed trachea.
Its just something we have learned to live with. We do our best to try and calm her down when she gets too excited. Petting her and talking softly to her helps.
